A common type of honey may hold the secret to treating breast cancer!

The study found that Manuka honey (a type of honey produced by a special type of bee that lives in certain countries such as Australia and New Zealand) may have cancer-protective properties, especially estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer, the most common subtype of breast cancer, accounting for about 70-80% of all cases of the disease.

The researchers found that Manuka honey significantly reduced tumor growth in mice with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer cells, by 84% without affecting normal breast cells or causing major side effects.

Higher concentrations of this honey also led to a greater reduction in cancer cell growth.

Manuka honey reduces the levels of signaling pathways that are up-regulated in cancer, such as AMPK/AKT/mTOR and STAT3, which are involved in the growth of cancer cells. In addition to stimulating the death of breast cancer cells, and enhancing the effectiveness of existing treatments such as the drug “Tamoxifen.”

Research has shown that Manuka honey, known for its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, is also rich in compounds such as flavonoids, phytochemicals, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, amino acids and minerals, which have demonstrated anti-cancer potential at the molecular level by inhibiting the pathways activated in cancer, which stimulate tumor proliferation, growth and metastasis.

Researchers believe that one of the mechanisms by which Manuka honey works is by blocking estrogen receptors, making it effective as a potential nutritional supplement against hormone-sensitive breast cancer.

The results suggest the potential for Manuka honey to be developed as a natural supplement, or even a stand-alone treatment for estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer, especially for patients who are resistant to conventional treatments.
