A centenary of the Artigas School in Paraguay is remembered this Sunday the 28th with Uruguayan riders

Asunción, IP Agency.- This Sunday the 28th, the Uruguayan educational institution that carries the legacy of General José Gervasio Artigas celebrates 100 years of existence in Paraguay. To commemorate his centenary, a group of horseback riders arrived in Asunción, following a month of traveling from Montevideo across borders.

Artigas had died in exile in the Ybyray estate of Asunción on September 23, 1850. Initially his remains rested in the Recoleta cemetery, but in 1855 they were repatriated to Uruguay.

In his memory, the school that bears his name in the Botanical Garden of Asunción was inaugurated on April 28, 1924, which stands as a symbol of the historical friendship between Uruguay and Paraguay, linked since the time of the revolution and forged through through significant gestures over the years.

Since its opening a century ago, the Artigas school has been recognized for its binational educational proposal, teaching both the history and geography of Uruguay and Paraguay, in a curricular framework that reflects the identity and cultural diversity of both countries.

María José Volpe, the school’s principal since February 2021, described how this institution has become a reference center for the Asunción community, valuing and appreciating the figure of Artigas as an essential part of its identity.

The location of the school on the property where Artigas spent his last days not only evokes the history of the Uruguayan hero, but also represents a tangible bond between both nations. The Artigas tree, known as the ybyrapytá, remains a landmark for visitors and students, remembering the legacy of the revolutionary leader who taught children to read and write under his shadow.

The success and appreciation of the Artigas School in Paraguay is reflected in its high demand and the recognition of the Paraguayan educational authorities, which have subsidized the institution since 2017.

The pedagogical proposal, which includes learning Guarani as a second language and access to English through the Ceibal Plan, has highlighted this school as an example of educational excellence.

In the context of this celebration, the educational community joins the march towards Paraguay, an international event that symbolizes the link between Uruguay and Paraguay and celebrates the legacy of a school that transcends geographical and cultural borders.

Riders of the “March to Paraguay” were honored

The group of riders participating in the “March to Paraguay” began on March 15 in Montevideo and brought letters written by Uruguayan schoolchildren to the school in commemoration of its centenary. They were honored by Paraguayan authorities in Itapúa and Asunción; as well as at the Artigas School.

The objective of this march, organized by traditionalist societies and sharecroppers in southern Uruguay, is to pay tribute to the public school and its artistic values.

Children from different schools, such as No. 4 “José Artigas” and No. 51 “Paraguay,” personally delivered the letters to the rider Leonardo Saracho in the Plaza Independencia in Montevideo.

The march was declared of national interest by the presidency of the friendly country, recognizing its historical and educational importance.

During the journey, in each school where the letters are delivered, seeds of the ybyrapytá tree of the Solar de Artigas will be planted as a symbol of brotherhood and connection between both countries.
