Some seven million voters were called to the polls this Sunday, July 31 to renew 165 seats of deputies divided into eight lists. A key ballot for the majority as for the opposition to measure the balance of power before the presidential election scheduled for 2024. The results are pending but the power claims ” an unquestionable victory », in 30 departments out of 46.
With our correspondent in Dakar, Charlotte Idrac
In the polling center of the Medina district, the fourteen polling stations closed a few minutes following 6 p.m., the official closing time. At the end of the followingnoon, there was a small influx: voters often vote at the last minute, said an office manager. But overall, there were no crowds in the centers visited in Dakar and the suburbs. Same thing in other cities of the country, according to several testimonies. For example, in Ziguinchor, in Casamance, the administrative authorities reported a participation rate of 34% at 4 p.m., but at this stage we do not have a general participation rate.
However, Yewwi Askan Wi seems to be confirming his breakthrough from the last local elections in January. It is the main opposition coalition led by Ousmane Sonko who himself might not be a candidate. The opposition would also win in the department of Ziguinchor in Casamance, with its head of the list Guy Marius Sagna, leader of the Frapp / France Degage movement. His main opponent in the ruling coalition Benno Bokk Yaakaar has admitted defeat.
In Dakar, the mayor and head of the departmental list Barthélemy Dias claims victory. He even celebrated with his activists at the start of the night in the streets of the capital, with music and horns.
Around 1 a.m., the presidential majority took stock and claimed victory: “ We won the elections “, assures Aminata Touré, head of the national list Benno Bokk Yaakaar. ” If you counted on your fingers, we gained 30 departments, this undoubtedly gives us a majority in the National Assembly. »
Sporadic incidents were reported during the day, for example in Guediawaye, in the suburbs. However, at the end of the followingnoon, the Electoral Commission said it had noted a vote ” in peace and discipline » « in most offices “. Also according to Cena, nearly 98% of offices had opened on time this morning.
After the counting, the minutes will be compiled by the departmental vote counting commissions. The first trends should be announced by the coalitions themselves in the evening. The purpose of the oppositions is to impose cohabitation on President Macky Sall. The majority aims to maintain its comfortable presence in the National Assembly.
