Andy Hackettand british fisherman 42-year-old, spent more than 25 minutes trying to catch the huge fish in Champagne, France. The gigantic orange specimen, nicknamed The Carrot (La Zanahoria), weighs more than 30 kilos.
The Carrot is believed to be over 20 years old and was laid in a lake in France when it was young. This fish weighs 13 kilos more than what was considered the world’s largest goldfish, caught in 2019 by Jason Fugate in Minnesota, United States.
“I always knew The Carrot was there, but I never thought I would get it,” Hackett said. He added: “I knew it was a big fish when it took my bait and went up and down with it. Then it surfaced at 30 or 40 meters and I saw it was orange.”
The fisherman took a picture with him and returned it to French waters. Afterwards she celebrated with a cup of tea. “It was brilliant to catch him, but it was also pure luck,” she said.
The fish is a hybrid species of a leather carp and a koi carp, which are traditionally orange in color.
“We put up The Carrot regarding 20 years ago as something different for customers to fish for,” said Jason Cowler, a fishing manager. He also explained that from that moment he continued to grow and that he does not usually come to the surface too much. “He is in excellent health. Congratulations to Andy on a great catch,” he concluded.
