A British-European statement calling for a ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza

London – Britain and the European Union announced yesterday, Wednesday, the necessity of an urgent ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza to prepare the atmosphere for a political solution in the Middle East.

This came in a joint statement following a meeting that took place between British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels.

The statement stated that the two sides agreed to strengthen relations between the European Union and Britain, and affirmed their firm support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

He noted that Starmer and von der Leyen would cooperate closely on global issues such as geopolitical developments, irregular migration, climate change, and energy prices.

The two sides also condemned the Iranian attacks on Israel, and affirmed their support for the Israeli side’s right to “self-defense.”

The statement pointed out that reducing tensions by all parties in the region is considered a top priority.

He added: “The necessity of coordinating the diplomatic response to the situation in the Middle East was emphasized, and all parties were called upon to exercise restraint and stop the bloodshed. The leaders stressed the need to declare an urgent ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza to prepare the atmosphere for a political solution.”

“In response to Israel’s assassination of Ismail Haniyeh and Hassan Nasrallah and its massacres in Gaza and Lebanon,” Iran on Tuesday fired dozens of missiles at Israel (180 by Tel Aviv’s estimate), causing human casualties, material damage, and the closure of airspace, while millions of Israelis rushed to shelters.
