Surgeons announced the success of transplanting a pig’s kidney into the body of a brain-dead man, as the kidney is still functioning normally despite the passage of more than a month since its transplantation.

The New York University Langone Medical Center revealed the details of the most recent experiment in this context, on Wednesday, which has so far resulted in the longest working period of a pig kidney with a human body, although it was conducted after he had passed away.

And the “Associated Press” agency stated that the experiment did not end after the transplant, as a medical team from New York is still following the performance of the transplanted kidney for the second month.

Dr. Robert Montgomery, director of the Langone Institute for Organ Transplantation, considered that “it seems possible that the transplanted organ will function like a human organ until now.”

Montgomery said, in conjunction with the operation to replace the man’s kidneys with one kidney from a genetically modified pig on July 14, “It looks better than a human kidney, and I watched it and it immediately begins to produce urine.”

The experiment is the latest in a series of scientific developments to renew hope for the success of animal-to-human transplants after decades of failure.
