From the back cover of the book
This book highlights the importance of the neglected art of scenography in the design of performances and performances in the theater and beyond, utilizing recent methodological and critical tools. At the center of these new perceptions of scenography is the space and the work as a multi-sensory experience co-created by the artists and the audience.
The approach emphasizes the relationships of bodies, objects and senses in space that produce atmospheres, i.e. environments with a theatrical and emotional charge. At the same time, it encourages critical inquiries that challenge dominant and normative perceptions regarding space. The case studies that make up the book cover an impressively wide range of research fields, from theatre, performance, dance, film and concert music to architecture, visual installation, fashion and cultural heritage. The book encourages holistic approaches to knowledge and artistic creation in a contemporary context.
