In the video, Barty said, along with her best friend and former doubles partner Casey Delacqua: "I know I’ve done that before but with different feelings".
The Australian added: "I am so grateful for tennis, it has given me all my dreams and more, but I know now is the time to walk away and chase other dreams and put my rackets aside.".

Barty’s retirement comes after winning 15 titles, and less than two months after winning the Australian Open, her third Grand Slam title, after winning Wimbledon 2021 and French Open 2019.
In a video on her Instagram account, the emotional Barty said:Ashleigh Barty People have a lot of dreams they want to chase, and that doesn’t necessarily include traveling around the world and being away from their family and being away from their home, which is where they always love to be.”
