A BMW film (almost) selected at the Cannes Film Festival

It’s much easier, when you have one foot in the door, to settle in the living room, or rather in the cinema room. This is the case of BMW which, since last year, succeeded Renault, and transports the stars and guests of the Cannes festival whose red carpet will be rolled out in a few days. The German will therefore do it once more in the big discount of people, but not only: he has decided to make his cinema too.

This is because BMW remembered an old in-house department, baptized BMW Films, which, at the beginning of the 21st century, produced a few short films straddling classic fiction and scripted . This small series, called the Hire, called on some solid directors like Tony Scott, Ang Lee or Wong Kar Wai and some rather beefy actors like Ray Liotta. The series has even offered the services of Madonna. Just that.

Let’s calm down, this is not an official selection poster, but BMW’s The Calm

And then the reels were put away in the closet and the matter was forgotten. Until this contract that the Munich resident signed with the biggest film festival in the world in 2022. A contract where BM undertakes, all the same, to supply for more than a fortnight, 200 cars which shuttle between hotels and the Palais des Festivals. A certain effort which deserves well that one appropriates a little of the glamorous image of the event, it is said in Munich.

A long credits and a short film

And why not by reviving this good old idea from 2001, BMW Films, and producing a new short film. ? No sooner said than done, and now appears The Calm, an 8-minute film whose credits might be longer than the work itself. Because at BMW we did not skimp. In the executive production, we find Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun : Maverick). Sam Hargrave is directing (the actor behind the camera had already made a forgettable Atomic Blonde, among others). As for the music, it is composed by Hans Zimmer, the oscar-winning king of soundtracks to whom we owe those of Gladiator, Interstellar or Dune.

All these eminent but unknown people, that’s all well and good, but the fans want stars. On this side, BMW played it by age group. For the youngest, the brand has entrusted one of the two main roles to Pom Klementieff, a subscriber to Guardians of the Galaxy since the start of the franchise. For those who are a little older, and more potential BMW buyers, the brand has enlisted Uma Thurman, the heroine in yellow of Kill Bill.

Obviously, the two girls are in very great danger, but manage to save their skins between the Martinez hotel and the back seat of the BMW I7 (in M70 version of 660 hp please) the third heroine of The Calm. Moreover, the short film will be broadcast in Cannes during the festival, in several places and on the famous 31-inch screen nestled in the cabin roof of the massive sedan and which lowers, but also on the Youtube channel of the brand, for those who will not go to Cannes and have not yet found a moment to order the large electric sedan in the M version at 191,700 euros.
