a blowtorch to be expected from Wednesday

The heat wave is about to return to Switzerland from the middle of the week. This new episode of hot weather could prove to be longer than the one that hit the country in mid-June, Meteonews warns on Sunday.

The heat of the weekend in French-speaking Switzerland was tempered by an often moderate breeze, but this should only be a respite before the new heat wave episode which will “gradually settle in from the middle of the week”, writes the weather information website.

The heat waves to come could “eventually be more lasting and more intense than those observed shortly after mid-June”, according to Météonews, which speaks of a potentially “worrying” situation.

35 degrees in sight

The high temperatures should occur on the Plateau and in the Geneva region, in particular, from Wednesday at the latest and continue until July 20 in any case. Maximums of 31 to 34 degrees will be frequently recorded during the afternoons between Wednesday and Saturday on the south of the French-speaking Plateau and around Lake Geneva, or even already values of 35 degrees in Valais. Current models indicate that the heat wave could strengthen from Sunday July 17.

Meteonews thus evokes for Switzerland a “third blow of the blowtorch”, after the first hot episode in the middle of May, followed by the heat wave of the past month.

The dryness of the soil will only increase over the next ten days and the danger of fire will continue to increase, warn specialists.
