A. Bilotaitė discussed the challenges of migration and illegal transportation of people in Germany

A. Bilotaitė, in a meeting with the Minister of the Interior of Germany, Nancy Faeser, and the head of the Federal Police, Dieter Rommann, presented the measures taken by Lithuania to stop illegal migration and to respond to threats related to the increased flows of labor migration.

Germany is moving to tighten its immigration policy, abandoning its previous open-door policy, as the number of refugees arriving becomes too high, according to a report. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the German government has recently taken measures aimed at facilitating the deportation of illegal migrants, limiting their freedom of movement, and their benefits. Germany, along with Poland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Austria, have also taken additional border control measures. This reduced the flow of illegal migrants from 700 to 250 cases per day.

A. Bilotaitė also presented the experience and measures of regional cooperation initiated by Lithuania in order to control illegal migration. The cooperation format of the internal affairs ministers of six states of the region – Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Norway and Finland – brought together by the Minister’s initiative allows for prompt exchange of information and response to instrumentalized migration from Russia and Belarus.

According to the ministry, Lithuania is also strengthening the fight against illegal human trafficking – 128 pre-trial investigations have been launched this year. Legal labor migration also poses challenges. The number of foreigners living in Lithuania exceeded 200 thousand. limit.

This year, 50 thousand people came to Lithuania to work. foreigners, mainly from Belarus, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and India. More than 16 thousand foreigners are prohibited from entering Lithuania due to threats to national security.

According to the minister, when solving the labor force problem, it is important to regulate labor migration flows more effectively and not to overlook threats to national security.

In response to the abuse of foreigners’ employment procedures, the Ministry of the Interior proposes to adapt the migration policy taking into account the threats – it is planned to reduce the number of external service provider centers, to tighten the control over the employment and life of foreigners, employment conditions and requirements related to integration and knowledge of the state language.
