A big leap towards rehabilitation

Marion Bohec, psychiatric nurse, accompanied Marc on the path to recovery. Last fall, they parachuted together, the realization of a joint project. Marc’s courage and determination marked his ability to gain height to experience the freedom of free fall!

It was in 2009 that I met Marc for the first time. He suffered from auditory persecutory hallucinations and was hospitalized in the rehabilitation department at the EPSM Charcot (South Brittany). I had been working there for a year. When the symptoms regressed, I offered him therapeutic education sessions (TEP) on schizophrenia, first individually, then accompanied by his mother. At that time, we did not talk much regarding TPE, we did, occasionally, simple “disease education”. Marc’s mother was satisfied because it was the first time that her son’s pathology had been explained to her. Over the course of the ETP sessions, a bond of trust was created between Marc and me. Released from the EPSM in 2010, he was never re-hospitalized once more. At the end of 2011, I applied for the creation of a Psychosocial Rehabilitation nurse position. I divide my time between the Socio-Therapeutic Association for Rehabilitation and Mutual Aid (ASTRE) for home monitoring of users in association apartments, and a social center: Espace Bonnafé. In 2013, following an agreement with the local GEM (Mutual Support Group), once a month, I led health education workshops on themes chosen by the “gemmers”. I meet Marc once more. A loyal member, he comes to GEM almost every day. He now lives alone in an apartment in the town of Hennebont. Marc is a pleasant person but rather passive, a bit nonchalant.

“We went through the clouds” !

One day in 2017, informally, I told him regarding my passion for skydiving since I was 15. I then see his eyes light up. “ I’ve been dreaming of taking a trip too for a long time! “. From then on, every time he sees me, he will say to me “ might you help me with this project? » Until 2023, we have therefore matured and prepared this Personalized Atypical Rehabilitation Project (PPRA)! After many explanations, visualization, advice from my psychiatrist, medical certificate of fitness, I booked “a jump” to the Vannes – Meucon skydiving center. Marc and I met there on September 28 at 1:30 p.m. I am, that day, resting. Marc came accompanied by the GEM coordinator, Peggy Savoye, who also supported him in his project and Christian, one of his friends, also a GEM member. After a briefing with the instructor on the equipment, the safety instructions, the procedure for the jump… here we are now in the same plane! At 4000 meters, the door opens. Marc is hanging on to the monitor, his feet in the air. I jump at the same time as them. I join them by doing a dive to fly in front of Marc, 50 cm from him! What follows is 44 seconds of free fall, from 4000 to 1500 meters of altitude, at a speed of 220 km/h. At 1500 m, the instructor opens the parachute. I watch them leave, opening mine a few seconds later. 653rd parachute jump for me, first for Marc who managed to save 260 euros for his tandem jump. Arriving on the ground, Marc was smiling. Watching me pack my parachute, he shared his emotions with me: “ My ears hurt a little, is that normal? I saw you grab the hands of the monitor to spin me, it was incredible! I really liked the plane ride but the free fall was still violent, we went through clouds! » I was delighted to have been able to accompany Marc, to have made this big leap with him that he wanted so much!

“The GEM coordinator was surprised to see how much this project mobilized Marc, she had never seen him “so motivated for something”.

The path traveled

The projects of the people we support are varied and you have to believe in them as much as they do to have a chance of seeing them succeed. My only regret is not having had a camera on my helmet to film Marc’s jump. He will nevertheless keep the memory of it in his memory “for life”. Four days following the jump, I saw Marc once more at the GEM country party. He demonstrated, once once more, his emotion: “ this parachute jump was really great, but you have to prepare for it anyway, not everyone can do it “. Marc, he did it!
