A battery that can be charged once and run for thousands of years, learn the details

Whether the battery is for a phone or a car, charge it once, then your grandchildren can use it too.

A Californian company has developed a nano-diamond battery from nuclear waste that can hold a charge for more than 5,000 years.

Battery power comes from radioactive material used in nuclear reactors. Sansdans say that the hardest metal diamond has been used in the manufacture of nano diamond battery, due to which it emits less radiation than the human body.

Scientists say that they have successfully completed two laboratory tests of the said battery. The battery was charged up to 40 percent by solar power, which is a significant achievement since solar power can typically charge a battery only 15 to 20 percent.

Scientists who have developed a battery that will last for 5,000 years say that they will be able to charge the battery up to 90% very soon.

The battery is surrounded by several protective layers of synthetic diamond, which is the hardest metal. The energy from the isotope is absorbed into the diamond by a process known as ‘inelastic scattering’ and is used to generate electricity.

Energy will be stored in secondary charge storage such as capacitors, supercapacitors and cells etc. Carbon-14 is a short-range radiation that can be quickly absorbed by any solid material. It is dangerous to touch with hands, but it cannot come out of the layers of the diamond.

This battery is capable of charging itself automatically. That is, the battery manufactured in 2016 can hold up to 7746 charges.

Normal batteries have to be charged frequently, but this nanodiamond battery does not have to bear this difficulty and its voltages are also high.

The company says the first NDB commercial prototype battery will be available later this year, and several companies, including an aerospace company, are among the buyers of the battery.
