Xungong Yiyi|The average monthly income of Hawaiian food delivery drivers reached 74,000 Hong Kong dollars last year
In Hong Kong, the income from food delivery is enough to meet life, but it may not remind everyone of “high-paying jobs”. Ronald Coleman, a 45-year-old man in Hawaii, delivered food full-time. Last year, his annual income reached US$114,000 (approximately HK$890,000), or an average monthly income of HK$74,000; he described himself as “delivering food in heaven”.
“Paradise” not only refers to Hawaii’s reputation as a “vacation paradise”, but also refers to “a paradise for making money”. Before becoming a delivery driver, Coleman worked in the auto repair industry in Michigan, USA. This hard work made him exhausted every day. According to a “Business Insider” report, since three years ago, Lonnu Keman has delivered food through the “DoorDash” food delivery platform, and has maintained a stable high income for three years.
In the summer of 2020, he tried the food delivery platform DoorDash for the first time, and the good experience made him finally decide to work on the “food delivery” job full-time. He moved to Hawaii the following year and continued to work full time. That year, he completed more than 24,000 deliveries, and his annual income reached US$73,000 (regarding HK$570,000).
The report mentioned that Coleman’s high income is mainly due to one reason-generous tips.
Coleman works in Honolulu (Honolulu), the largest urban area in Hawaii. According to Coleman, almost every delivery in Honolulu receives a very high tip. He tried to deliver an order of regarding HK$42, but received a tip of HK$870; he also tried to deliver an order of regarding HK$100, and received a tip of regarding HK$400.
“A lot of people in Honolulu are on vacation or traveling, so they’re especially willing to tip generously,” Coleman says. But generous tips aren’t the norm in the food delivery industry. On the contrary, drivers of many food delivery platforms, including Uber and DoorDash, often complain that they receive too little tips.
Coman’s success may have benefited from the unique advantages of Honolushan District, Hawaii. Hawaii has always been a tourist destination in the United States, with more than 1.67 million tourists visiting in 2022 alone.
Coleman said that he has no plans to leave Hawaii for the time being, and he hopes to use his current savings to start a business in the future.
