A. Armonaitė says that the Freedom Party will support the proposal to ban gambling advertising

“The members of our faction have signed the proposals of the Seimas members of the Homeland Union to limit advertising and we will support them,” A. Armonaitė told Žinių radio on Thursday.

In mid-February, amendments to the law were registered, proposing to further tighten gambling advertising from 2025. They were supported by the signatures of regarding half a dozen MPs, mostly from the ruling majority.

Amendments to the Law on Gambling propose to prohibit the dissemination of information that gambling companies support any public events, activities, natural or legal persons.

The representative of the Freedom faction of the Seimas, Morgana Danielė, proposed a transitional period of several years for the sports sector, which would have time to find other sponsors following losing the funds of gambling companies, and she proposes to completely ban advertising here from January 2028.

The media also warns that following the adoption of amendments to the law, its income will drop significantly, when the advertising market is almost not growing.

The former partner of the investment company “BaltCap” fund Šarūnas Stepukonis spoke regarding the efforts to tighten the requirements for gambling advertising or to ban it altogether, as the casino was suspected of having lost millions of euros from the funds of the fund’s companies, and the gambling company “Olympic Casino Group Baltija” was publicly trying to abdicate responsibility.

A. Armonaitė emphasized that the person who committed financial crimes is to blame for this scandal, not gambling advertising.

“The Bank of Lietuvos, the Financial Crimes Investigation Service will have to present not only conclusions regarding the case itself, but also (suggestions – BNS) how to prevent such things in the future,” said the politician.

According to her, today the attention of controlling institutions in Lithuania is paid to small financial technology companies, but the case of “BaltCap” shows that the state’s attention should be elsewhere.

“Perhaps the selection, where there is a really high risk of losing finances or committing crimes and where there is little importance, should also be done by these services (BNS),” said the leader of the Freedom Party.

Š. Stepukonis is suspected of illegally embezzling tens of millions of euros from BaltCap-related companies.
