A. Anušauskas discussed cooperation in the field of security with the first Canadian ambassador

As the ministry reported, in the meeting with Jeanette Sautner, A. Anušauskas discussed Canada‘s contribution to the NATO force integration unit in Lithuania, involvement in the activities of the Baltic Defense College, joint exercises, and training.

“I am happy about the opening of the new embassy, our military cooperation will be even closer from now on. I would like to thank Canada for its contribution to the security of our region, strengthening the defense of NATO’s eastern edge and deploying troops in Latvia,” said Minister A. Anušauskas.

Canada opened its embassy in Lithuania in July, until then the office of the Canadian embassy operated in Vilnius, and the ambassador to Lithuania resided in Riga.

According to the ministry, during the meeting with the ambassador, relevant NATO issues and Canada’s decision to commit to defending the eastern border of the Alliance were also discussed.

Canada leads NATO’s forward force in Latvia, which will be expanded to a brigade-sized unit. According to the Ministry, this is a “considerable contribution to the security of the Baltic region”, which is also strengthened by “Germany’s determination to permanently deploy a brigade in Lithuania”.

The minister assured the ambassador that the allies’ decisions to be in the region are extremely important, as they contribute to deterrence.

During the meeting, it was also discussed that the implementation of regional defense plans is now the most important task, the preliminary deployment of equipment and ammunition in the region, and defense readiness were also discussed. Lithuania calls on all receiving and sending countries to work closely on this issue.

The issue of Ukraine, which is fighting Russia, was also discussed, as well as assistance to it.

As indicated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, A. Anušauskas admitted that Lithuania seeks closer cooperation in solving the NATO-Ukraine political issue. The importance of the demining coalition being formed was particularly emphasized, for which partners are being sought who can contribute their expertise, capacity or funding.
