Father and son ride bicycles, mother drives behind to support
Yangyang is a 9-year-old boy from Zigong City, Sichuan Province, China. On July 13, a family of three started their second cycling trip on Provincial Highway 318.
Yangyang’s mother, Ms. Wang, said the plan for the trip was relatively simple. They drove to Kangding, Sichuan, and the father and son rode along National Highway 318.
A Yangyang boy who loves cycling
Every day, Yangyang and his father ride bicycles for about 10 hours, covering a distance of between 100 kilometers and 120 kilometers. They start at 8 a.m. or 9 a.m., stop for lunch at 1 p.m. or 2 p.m., then continue riding until 6 p.m. or 7 p.m., then check into a hotel to rest.
As logistical support, Ms. Wang prepares breakfast for the whole family every day, packs their luggage and sets off. Along the way, Yangyang’s mother would buy fresh food, go to a suitable place, and light a fire to cook. During inconvenient times, the family of three often uses dried vegetables, which are easy to prepare. Sometimes when I can’t find a room, I will set up a tent to spend the night.

During this trip, the Yangyang family often encountered heavy rain. Since ultraviolet rays tend to be stronger after every rain, the father and son’s skin peeled and turned black. Two years ago, they passed Provincial Highway 318, so when they went to Bangda District, Qamdo City, Tibet this time, the boy decided to change the route and take Provincial Highway 317 to the Qinghai-Tibet route.
I become more mature every time I travel.
According to reports, both Ms. Wang and her husband are studying in college. Their son Yangyang is 9 years old and entering fourth grade this year. He has loved spending time in nature since he was a child.
Yangyang learned to ride a bicycle when he was 5 years old. At the beginning of the winter vacation in 2022, a family of three started from Zigong and rode to Chengguan via National Highway 318. They also rode through Yunnan, Shaanxi, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong and other places.

“To be more precise, it was my kids who ‘led’ us on the bike rides. We didn’t plan every trip in detail, we just decided where we wanted to go in advance. We went north during the summer vacation and came back during the winter vacation. Going south was the general rule. ” , Wang shared.
As for which path to take, their family will listen to their son’s wishes. In the past three years, young Yangyang has cycled a total of more than 11,000 kilometers. For him, this activity is tiring, but it also brings a lot of joy.
“I’m so lucky to have a son who loves riding, and if he didn’t love the sport, we wouldn’t have the opportunity to travel across the country with him.” Yangyang’s father said.
In Ms. Wang’s view, cycling can not only help children exercise, but also help them experience life more deeply, enhance their life experience, broaden their horizons, and expand their minds. After each trip, she and her husband clearly see their son’s growth and improvements in strength, perseverance, endurance and problem-solving skills.
Regarding their children’s education, Ms. Wang said that she and her husband have no special requirements for their children in primary school.
“We tell you, first of all, you have to worry about your studies, and secondly, you have to get above 90 points in each subject. In the rest of the time, you can do what you like.” she shared.
