In the early hours of this Monday, a 5.9 earthquake was recorded on the border between Panama and Costa Rica, causing minor damage inside some buildings and no fatalities.

«Despite the magnitude of the earthquake (5.9) that occurred during the early hours of the morning in David, I can give the country a message of reassurance. We have no fatalities at the moment and we are carrying out monitoring in the entire area.“I will keep you informed,” said the new president of Panama, Jose Raul Mulino.

The Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama indicated in its report that the earthquake occurred at approximately 4:54 local time (9:54 GMT) with a depth of 11 kilometers in the province of Chiriquí, bordering Costa Rica. Specifically, 5 kilometers east of the area of ​​El Progreso, which borders the neighboring country.

The agency said that at 7:30 a.m. local time (12:30 GMT) there was an followingshock of magnitude 4.9 with a depth of 6 kilometers in the same area.
