The Mixed Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki imposed a 12-year prison sentence on a 48-year-old man who was found guilty of the death of the 40-year-old drug addict, who was found unconscious and in a “pool” of blood, in front of the building of the Library of the School of Theology of AUTH, on August 2015.
The court unanimously found the 48-year-old, also a drug user, guilty of the charge of manslaughter, without recognizing any mitigating circumstances.
How the case was solved and the arrest made
At the point where the unfortunate woman received the savage blows from the defendant, a beer bottle was found which was confiscated by the police and following a laboratory check a fingerprint was found and thus the 48-year-old became a defendant. The woman, following the brutal beatings she received, was taken to the hospital and almost two months later she ended up without a moment of contact with the environment and being able to testify.
This is a case which for many years remained unsolved, with the accused, following committing the murder, fleeing to Italy. In 2022 he was extradited to Greece following a request for judicial assistance and following his confession to the investigator he was deemed a temporary prisoner.
It is noted that his biological material (DNA) was identified in the laboratory on the fingernails of the patient and the 48-year-old was forced to admit that he was the one who took the woman’s life.
In his plea, at the appellate court, he admitted that he hit the victim, but maintained that he did not intend to kill her. He claimed that while he was sleeping he felt someone searching his personal belongings and then he reacted, while he stated that he responded to blows he received first from the victim.
After the decision of the Court of Appeal, the accused will return to prison to serve the rest of their sentence.
