A 46 kilometer long car chase has come to an end: A young partner must be behind bars

A little over a year later, the two now 21-year-old men were on Wednesday sentenced to two years and six months in conditional prison terms at the Court in Aalborg for running away from the police in what ended up being a dramatic car chase.

The two men were also both convicted of possession of weapons.

The car chase took place over 46 km, and the frantic driving continued through various city zones, where neither the duty to give way nor the correct traffic in a roundabout was taken into account, as the driver of the car passed on the left of an embankment.

The escape from the police started on Høgstedvej near Vrå and ended on Hellumvej near Hjallerup. The car ended up being stopped by the police using spikes, according to the indictment.

– The driver explained in court that he chose to run away from the police as he had been deprived of his driving license earlier and knew very well that he should not be behind bars, says prosecutor in the case Peter Boesen.

Both the driver and passenger were also convicted of being in possession of drugs at the time of the arrest.

The driver was also convicted of repeatedly driving with euphoric substances in his blood.

Was stopped at gunpoint

A few months after the car chase in July 2023, the young partner was again stopped by the police in a car in a publicly accessible place.

In the car, the police found a functional pistol with an associated magazine, in which 15 sharp cartridges were inserted. In the car was also a loose-firing pistol with an associated magazine, in which one cartridge was inserted.

– They had acquired the gun because there were some they were afraid of. They knew very well that the loaded gun was in the car, one explained in court, says Peter Boesen and elaborates that what the court has emphasized in this case is precisely the relationship regarding the possession of weapons.

The driver of the car already admitted to possessing the gun back in January, which led to a reduced sentence due to new rules that if a confession is made that can save time and resources, it must be given weight in determining the sentence.

– The one perpetrator, the driver of the car, had several circumstances which were more serious and, overall, was given a higher sentence. But because he acknowledged the relationship earlier, he got a relaxation of his sentence, explains prosecutor Peter Boesen.

The driver took time to reflect on the verdict. The passenger received the sentence.
