Last night around 2 a.m., an accident with dramatic consequences occurred in Viesville (part of Pont-à-Celles, north of Charleroi): a man just over 44 years old lost his life at the wheel of his car.
Between Courcelles and Pont-à-Celles, a police team saw him rolling “very quickly” in a limited area, but he was already gone before they might turn on the flashing lights. He was speeding towards Viesville. “There is no need to speak of a hit and run, it is not certain that the motorist realized that there was a police car”reports the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office, informed of the facts.
But a few kilometers further, the motorist missed the bend called the “little bridge”, on rue de l’Écluse between Courcelles and Viesville. His vehicle sped straight over the creek, crashing into trees before ending up on the roof.
A local resident explains that he heard a loud crash, followed a few tens of seconds later by sirens. Nine vehicles from the police forces, local areas Brunau, Trieux and Charleroi were on the scene, according to our correspondent. Jumet firefighters, an ambulance and an SMUR went to the scene, but it was too late.
The driver was killed instantly.
Update 2:00 p.m. > The prosecution reports that there is no reason to speak of a hit and run.
