A Syrian was convicted of serious bodily harm at the Salzburg Regional Court on Monday. The 23-year-old suddenly punched a police officer in the face. The judge spoke of a very reprehensible, motiveless act.

The 29-year-old police officer is still suffering from the severe punch she received from a 23-year-old Syrian man a good three weeks ago, on May 19, near Salzburg’s main train station. “He was staring at me funny before. And suddenly I took the hit,” said the police officer on Monday at the regional court as a witness in the criminal trial against the Syrian. The fact is that the officer suffered a fracture of her right eye socket as a result of the blow and had to have an operation. She still has to take six painkillers a day. “The pain is severe at night,” she says to judge Philipp Grosser. The police officer will be on sick leave at least until the beginning of July.

The now accused lay in a meadow – the police officers helped him

According to the investigation, the policewoman and colleagues had been called by her to provide assistance in the Elisabeth suburb of Salzburg; a young man – it was the now accused Syrian (23) – apparently lying unconscious in a meadow. According to the criminal complaint, the 23-year-old was put in a stable side position by the police officers and the officers had requested the rescue. In the meantime, however, the Syrian had regained consciousness and immediately became aggressive. “A paramedic asked him if he had been drinking alcohol, but he didn’t answer. I just told him to answer – so he hit him,” said the 29-year-old police officer.

The accused pleaded guilty in court. He’s sorry, he also wanted to apologize to the police officer. The judge wants to know why he hit the woman. Answer from the 23-year-old: “I slept on a meadow there. Then there was an ambulance and the police. They woke me up and pulled me to the side. The policewoman talked and talked, screamed at me – that’s why I hit her .”
