An association from Chios, a few days following the massive participation of the island’s citizens in the race for autism, denounces a inhumane treatment of a minor student with autism.
Regarding the incident, there was an intervention by the Panchia Association of Persons with Disabilities, who in his statement denounces “inhumane conditions of hospitalization and transportation to a well-known Psychiatric Hospital”, as a 17-year-old student with autism was allegedly found handcuffed with straps.
“As part of the medical intervention, the child was strapped to the hospital bed… One can easily imagine the effects on a child with autism in such conditions”, the representatives of the association argue.
As they note, the specific student with autism was transferred to a psychiatric hospital in Athens with a prosecutor’s order, due to uncontrolled behavior, in order to be examined by specialist doctors and given appropriate treatment. However, according to the members of the association, following the overload of the trip, which was accompanied by a police officer, he was found, tied with straps to the bed of the psychiatric hospital, from where he was reportedly released only today, Monday.
The announcement of the Panchia Association of Persons with Disabilities:
With a prosecutor’s order, our member, a student with autism, was transferred to Athens due to uncontrolled behavior, in order to be examined by specialist doctors and given appropriate treatment.
However, we were informed regarding the inhumane conditions of his hospitalization and transport to a well-known Psychiatric Hospital, where, as part of the medical intervention, the child was tied with handcuffs to the hospital bed… One can easily imagine the effects on a child with autism in such conditions.
We demand an immediate investigation into this incident which raises very serious questions. The substantial lack of integrated social-state care and welfare, early diagnosis and follow-up, therapeutic approach and education, in cases of PWDs, within a specific context and with the necessary specialized staff, first and foremost on our island, is highlighted once once more. The management of autism concerns all its gradations and not only the mildest ones.
As an Association we stand in support of the family and the child. We are struggling, which is why we ask for the following to be answered:
Under what circumstances was the switch made? Were there similar scientific personnel in the convoy?
Why was he not hospitalized at the Psychiatric Clinic of Chios?
The Directorate of Social Care and the Social Counselor of P.E. have been informed regarding the incident. Chios?
