Martin Côté and Karine Levasseur experienced a nightmare following their 14-year-old teenager collapsed to the ground, in cardiorespiratory arrest, during football practice. If he is alive today, it is thanks to the speed of good Samaritans.
Adam Côté, originally from Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley, in Estrie, is a sportsman at heart. In addition to being in hockey-study concentration at La Ruche high school in Magog, he plays extracurricular football. His life changed during the last exercise of his practice on October 17.
“I asked my coach how much time was left [à l’exercice]. He told me: “one last time”. Five seconds later, I fell to the ground,” explained Adam, who has few memories of the event.
Without the vigilance of parents, coaches and first responders, Adam would have died of cardiorespiratory arrest.
“I felt like I was in a glass bubble,” recalled Martin, Adam’s father, who arrived on the scene shortly following. There were lots of things happening around. Although they told me lots of things, [je me disais]“it can’t be, not Adam”.”
The good Samaritans performed resuscitation maneuvers and had to use a defibrillator. Adam wants to thank them today: “Without them, I wouldn’t be here right now.”
“They are angels for us,” said Adam’s mother, Karine Levasseur, with emotion. […] We are grateful. It reminds us of the importance [des cours] resuscitation. These people were trained to [le faire].»
Adam was put in an induced coma for around twelve hours, before spending two weeks in hospital. He was diagnosed with a heart condition, tachycardia, which causes the heart to beat too quickly. Family members also had to undergo certain tests, which showed that Adam’s younger sister, Delphine, also had this problem.
Adam and Delphine now have to carry a defibrillator in their school bag at all times. Following this event, everyone in the family received cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training and encourages people to do the same.
The Cantonniers de Magog hockey team will pay tribute Friday evening to Adam and those who saved his life during a ceremony. The 14-year-old intends to do everything to once once more play the sports he loves so much.
There is also a mobile application, available on Android or Apple and created by the Jacques-de Champlain Foundation, which allows you to locate Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) nearby and which provides information regarding CPR.
