The Brazilian supplementary health sector continues to witness robust growth, reaching new heights in terms of beneficiaries. According to a recent survey by the National Agency of Supplementary Health (ANS), the sector serves a record-breaking 52,210,290 individuals enrolled in medical care plans and 34,466,532 individuals in exclusively dental plans as of December.
Strong Momentum in Medical and Dental Plans
Over the past year, medical-hospital plans saw an impressive surge of 862,771 new beneficiaries compared to December 2023. This momentum continued in December 2024, with an additional 156,217 users joining the plans compared to november. The exclusively dental plan sector also experienced notable growth, adding 2,065,209 beneficiaries in the year and 178,642 in December alone.
Geographic Distribution of Growth
The growth in supplemental health coverage is distributed across Brazil. Compared to December 2023, 24 states reported an increase in medical assistance plan beneficiaries. São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Amazonas stood out as the states with the largest absolute gains in beneficiaries. In the dental plan sector, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Paraná lead the way in terms of absolute growth.
Age Demographics and Trends
Analysis of age groups reveals intriguing trends. In the medical care sector, individuals aged 45 to 49 showed the most significant growth, with 240,336 new beneficiaries in the last year. The 50 to 54 age group followed closely behind, adding 125,734 new beneficiaries.
Exclusive dental plans witnessed the highest growth in the 45 to 49 year old age group, with 248,771 new users in the past year. The 70 to 74 year old age group also experienced substantial growth, with 193,557 new beneficiaries.
Sustained Growth and Post-Pandemic Impact
“Considering data from health insurance users over the past five years, we see that the supplementary health sector has maintained continuous growth,” states the ANS.
The ANS further highlights that the growth in beneficiaries outpaces population growth.According to the 2022 IBGE Census, the number of supplementary health beneficiaries increased by 12% between 2010 and 2022, while the Brazilian population grew by only 6.5% during the same period.
“The surge in demand for health plans since the Covid-19 pandemic could indicate that peopel are increasingly prioritizing access to the health system during times of critical need,” explains the ANS.
Focus on Oral Health
The significant growth in the exclusively dental plan segment suggests a heightened awareness of oral health importance.
Looking Ahead: Factors Shaping the Future
Sector Development Director at ANS, Maurício Nunes, offers insight into future trends, stating, “While the sector is expected to maintain its stability, we need to consider factors like the economic and financial scenario, employment rates, and health cost variations, all of which influence the supplementary health sector.”
Call to Action
