“Today” by The Smashing Pumpkins, a quintessential ’90s anthem, became the soundtrack to a pivotal scene in “Heart Eyes,” featuring Holt and co-star Ethan Pearce’s characters engaged in a playful roller skating session. While the song was initially scripted, Holt’s musical abilities were invited to shine through a captivating cover rendition.

“‘Today’ was in the script, but the idea of me singing it came way later. So I was very grateful that the producing team allowed me to come in and sing on a couple of songs for the show. I’m very musically driven,and there was so much ‘90s music on that show. I loved all of it. So the idea that I got to cover one of the songs changed everything for me while shooting it. I recorded it during production, so we actually got to listen to it while we were all on set. That was really fun, and it doesn’t really ever happen,” Holt shared, highlighting the special possibility to contribute her musical talent to the film.

Beyond the Screen: A Playground Costume Change

Holt’s involvement extended beyond acting and singing; she fully embraced the cinematic experience, even lending her wardrobe to co-star Sophia Reyes for a lighthearted “Letterboxd” segment filmed on set.

“(Laughs.) She sure was. Sophia showed up to set in a tank top saying, ‘olivia Holt’s #1 fan,’ and she was just wearing her regular getup of sweats and a pair of Converse. I don’t know where she got the idea, but then she decided to put on my costume. I had a pair of shorts that were a couple sizes bigger for the harness that I had to wear in some of the stunt sequences, so she was like, ‘I’m going to wear those.’ And she did! she wore them all day long with my belt. It was insane,” Holt recounted, emphasizing the playful camaraderie on set.

The lighthearted moment even sparked a “who wore it better” competition among the crew, with Reyes ultimately claiming victory, according to Holt.
