An Interview with Mike ‘Suggs’ Sugg
We’re thrilled to welcome back ska legends Madness to Cork this summer. In anticipation of their high-energy show at Virgin Media Park on June 20th, we sat down with frontman Mike ‘Suggs’ Sugg to talk about their enduring connection with the city, their musical legacy, and what fans can expect from this upcoming performance.
A History with Cork
archyde: Madness has a long and storied history with cork. you’ve played here previously, including iconic gigs at City Hall and Live at the Marquee. What is it about Cork that has kept bringing you back?
Suggs: Cork has always been such a vibrant and eager place for us. The crowd’s energy is infectious, and there’s a real love for ska music here. We always feel incredibly welcome when we play in Cork, and the memories we’ve made here are some of our most treasured.
From North London Invaders to “one Step Beyond”
Archyde: Your journey began as the North London Invaders, before morphing into Morris and the Minors and finally settling on the name Madness. How did this happen, and how did your sound evolve in those early days?
Suggs: Ah, those were the days! We were a bunch of young lads who just loved music. We went through a few name changes before landing on Madness, which felt right. Our sound evolved organically, taking inspiration from the likes of Prince Buster, The Specials, and our own experiences growing up in the North London streets.
The “Two Tone” Movement and Ska’s Revival
Archyde: Madness was a key player in the “two-tone” ska revival of the late 1970s and early 1980s. What was it like to be part of such a vibrant and influential movement?
Suggs: It was an amazing time. the energy was electric, and we felt like we were part of something truly special. We played alongside amazing bands like The Specials, The Beat, and The Selecter. It was a collision of culture and sound that had a lasting impact.
Chart Domination and Iconic Hits
Archyde: From “One Step Beyond” to “Baggy Trousers,” and “House of Fun,” your success in the UK charts was phenomenal. Which of your hits holds a special place in your heart, and why?
Suggs: That’s a tough one! Each song has its own story and memories. But “Our House” always feels incredibly personal to me.Its about the simple joys of life, the importance of place and belonging, and it seems to resonate with people across generations. It’s a real connection, isn’t it?
Enduring Legacy and the Power of Live Music
Archyde: Madness has been performing for nearly 50 years, with six of the original members still together. What keeps you going after all this time, and what is it about live music that continues to captivate you?
Suggs: It’s the people! The energy of the crowd, the shared experience, the way music can bring people together – that’s what keeps us going. And when you see a sea of faces singing along to your songs, it feels like pure magic. It’s a feeling unlike anything else.
