Makro and Metro Sites Acquired by Colruyt Group and LCV Real Estates

Former Makro and metro sites Find New Life Under New Ownership

In a meaningful real estate move, a joint venture between LCV Real Estates and the Colruyt Group has acquired a substantial portfolio of former Makro and Metro wholesale locations across Belgium. The deal encompasses an impressive 750,000 square meters of land, with approximately 160,000 square meters already developed. While the financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed, the acquisition signals a promising change for these once-empty properties.

These sites have been vacant sence the end of 2022 following the bankruptcy of Makro Cash & Carry Belgium earlier that year. The need to address potential issues like vandalism and illegal dumping has prompted temporary repurposing, with the Makro location in Machelen serving as a parking lot for over a thousand Tesla vehicles.

While the long-term vision for these properties is still taking shape, Colruyt Group spokeswoman Hanne Poppe hints at a range of possibilities. “That must all be studied now,” she explains. “We will have to sit around the table with various parties, including securing the necessary permits.” She adds that a temporary destination for these sites is one of the options on the table.

While Colruyt Group hasn’t ruled out developing their own retail concepts for some locations, they are also open to leasing spaces to third-party businesses. LCV Real Estates emphasizes the strategic value of the acquired land, highlighting its “excellent locations with a large redevelopment potential” and their expertise in mixed-use industrial growth.
