A Love Story Cut Short: Loss, Grief, and Unwavering Devotion
Grada Kreuze knows firsthand the profound pain of losing both parents within a short period.Their deaths came as a shock, leaving her grappling with immense grief and a complex sense of loss.
“He might have a broken heart,” grada thought about her father in the wake of this overwhelming tragedy.
Just days before, Grada had spoken with her mother, Giny, on September 2nd, 2024. The conversation was a mix of the ordinary and heartwarming. Giny, at 80 years old, had inquired about joining Grada for a drive along the newly constructed ring road in Groningen.
“Mama had asked if I wanted to go for a little way with her. Together on the new ring road in Groningen. That seemed nice to her. I had to laugh a bit about that. We actually did not do that enough together,” Grada recalls, a bittersweet smile gracing her lips as she remembers.
The following morning, the news arrived that would shatter their world. A nurse from the care home where Giny and her husband, Harm, resided, urgently called Grada. Giny was gravely ill and needed her daughter at her bedside.
“at first I thought the employee confused me with someone else. I had spoken to my mother the day before,I told her. There was nothing to her,” Grada remembers.
“come on,” the nurse pressed, her tone leaving no room for doubt.
Arriving at the care home in Hoogezand, Grada was instantly struck by the atmosphere of distress. Her father, overwhelmed with worry, was visibly shaken. Giny was ailing, confined to her bed, suffering from a high fever and unable to communicate effectively. A doctor at the care home diagnosed her condition as an infection or inflammation, deeming hospitalization unsuitable.
In the days that followed, Giny’s health deteriorated rapidly. It became tragically clear that she wouldn’t recover. While Grada mourned the impending loss of her mother, she was acutely aware of the profound impact this would have on her father, Harm.
“He was wearing her on his hands, he has always done that. My parents undoubtedly also had their things, because that’s how it goes in a relationship, but my sisters and I never really noticed,” Grada reflects, marveling at their unwavering devotion.
their love story was a tapestry woven with shared experiences – the trials of war, the profound grief of loss, the physical pain of illness, and the emotional wounds of trauma. Through it all, they stood by each other’s side. Like an unspoken language, Giny’s faintest gestures were understood by Harm, fulfilling her needs before she even voiced them.
In the final week of Giny’s life, Grada overheard her father whisper to his wife, “I’m going with you.” Grada’s heart clenched with a mix of sadness and understanding. “what are you saying now?” she thought to herself. But she said nothing. Giny’s unwavering love and the depth of their bond made it clear this was not just a fleeting thought; it was a profound commitment.
Grada reveals that while her mother had jokingly stated, “One of the two of us should go first,” her father emphatically disagreed, adding that he couldn’t bear the thought of living without her.Joint euthanasia, a topic they had never seriously considered.
A Heartbroken Farewell: When Grief Becomes Life-Threatening
Grada’s world shattered in September, a whirlwind of loss that began with a phone call about her mother, Giny.Giny had been battling pain and her health was failing. To ease her suffering, the agonizing decision was made to let her go peacefully. “My sisters and I took turns saying goodbye to her, my father was next to it, held her hand. Even when the dose of morphine was raised,” Grada recounted, the heartache evident in her voice.
The pain, however, wasn’t confined to Giny’s passing. Just hours later, Grada’s father, Harm, suddenly became deathly ill. “I remember that I said to my sister: ‘He might have a broken heart,'” Grada shared, her words tinged with disbelief. harm, too, seemed consumed by anguish. His heart, already weakened by Alzheimer’s, couldn’t bear the weight of his grief. He was afterward also put to sleep.
Three days later, fate delivered a final, impossible blow. The loss felt unending, a heart-wrenching rollercoaster that she never imagined she would endure.
A Husband, a wife, and an Empty house
Grada is grappling with a grief so profound that it feels like her world has shifted on its axis. The laughter that once echoed through her family home has faded, replaced by a silence that whispers reminders of what she’s lost. Her parents, two pillars of strength and love, are gone, leaving behind an ache that feels impossible to fill. The emptiness is palpable, especially during the holidays. “The first time Christmas with a few empty chairs at the table,” Grada recalls, her voice thick with emotion. ”No more oliebollen baking, which they did together every year.”

The pain is all-consuming, a relentless tide of complex emotions. “My emotions fluctuated from terrible anger and fears to deep sorrow and oppressive loneliness,” she shares, “Endless crying.”
Her father, Harm, had always been a stoic man, a quiet presence whose love was expressed in steadfast loyalty and unwavering support. Grada remembers him saying, “Women go for it,” a testament to his belief in his wife’s strength and resilience. She says, “harm was not spiritually set. ’I do. He only indicated all the time that he no longer wanted to, if she was gone.”

The world keeps spinning, but for Grada, time seems to have stalled. She finds herself constantly searching for meaning in the quiet emptiness of their absence.
“As I came to them so frequently enough,” she confides, “I often have the idea of: what should I do with my life now? It feels so strange that everything just goes on when you stand still, because you don’t know how to proceed.”
Finding solace in the unconditional love of her children, their partners, and her beloved dog Kaya, Grada slowly begins to piece her life back together. The journey is arduous, a constant struggle to find purpose and joy in the face of overwhelming loss.
“There are days that I think to myself:” It’s that Kaya has to get out.Or else I wouldn’t take a step outside. “”
Through the haze of grief, a glimmer of hope emerges. Grada knows that her parents’ unwavering love and support will forever be a guiding light, illuminating her path forward. She finds comfort in the memories, cherishing the moments that life offered and the enduring legacy of their love.

I hold on to that, it comforts me,” she says, finding solace in the promise of brighter days ahead.
