Daniel Mooney, a 37-year-old father of two, thought he was starting a new chapter in life. He and his family had just moved into their dream home in the Irish countryside, full of excitement for the future. But in May 2024, that dream was shattered. Daniel received a terrifying diagnosis: Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumors (DSRCT), a rare and aggressive cancer with a global occurrence of only 30 cases annually.
This devastating news forced Daniel to confront a daunting reality, but he refused to succumb to fear. “My focus has never wavered,” he declared. “I need to fight for my family, especially my boys. I want to be there to watch them grow, to guide them, and to create memories that will last a lifetime. The thought of them not remembering me is unbearable. I want to live for them!”
His resolve was put to the test as Daniel embarked on nine grueling rounds of chemotherapy. Despite the immense physical toll, he persevered, fueled by his unwavering love for his family. His bravery was rewarded with positive results. The largest tumor, initially a massive 25cm, shrunk dramatically to 8.4cm. This confinement of the cancer to his abdomen offered a sliver of hope amidst the darkness.
though, this victory was fleeting. The high cost of treatment and its debilitating side effects became meaningful hurdles. Daniel endured severe bone marrow suppression and faced two life-threatening bouts of sepsis, a chilling reminder of the relentless nature of his disease.
Scheduled for Febuary 17th,a major surgery looms as the next step in his battle. While not a cure, it offers a chance for more time, a precious commodity in his fight for survival.
Daniel’s hope now lies with a world-renowned team at the Cleveland Clinic in the USA. Led by Doctors pete Anderson, Dan Joyce, and Erin Murphy, this pioneering group has treated over 100 cases of DSRCT, specializing in cutting-edge treatment protocols, including immunotherapy.
