On February 2nd, 2025, 47 teams from across the Los Angeles Unified School District gathered for the 44th annual Academic Decathlon, a celebration of intellectual prowess and academic excellence. students, manny of them first-time participants, felt a mixture of excitement and nerves as they prepared too test their knowledge against the district’s brightest minds.
“This is my first year at Academic Decathlon,” shared 16-year-old Lauren Monzen of John Marshall High School, her voice brimming with enthusiasm.”I didn’t really think it’d be like this. This is incredibly exciting. I love the energy, and I’m just really happy right now.”
The “super Quiz,” the heart of the competition, demanded speed and precision. Students faced a rapid-fire barrage of questions spanning various subjects, leaving them mere seconds to formulate their answers. Each correct response earned valuable points,propelling teams closer to the coveted title. Under the overarching theme of “Our Changing Climate,” the “Super Quiz” unfolded in a thrilling relay format. Teams of shining minds faced off, showcasing their remarkable grasp of topics ranging from economics and history to literature and science.
After a fierce battle of wits, Verdugo Hills High School emerged as the tentative leader, securing first place. Northridge Academy High School followed closely behind in second, while Garfield High School secured third place. “The competition was fierce,but Verdugo Hills truly stood out,” remarked an observer. “Their teamwork and knowledge were truly notable.”
While the official winner won’t be declared until the Academic Decathlon Awards Ceremony on February 22nd at East Los Angeles College, one thing is certain: the talent displayed at this competition is inspiring.The highest-scoring teams, along with any wildcard selections, will advance to the state competition in Santa Clara, California, in March.
LAUSD boasts a distinguished history in this prestigious competition, holding a remarkable 23 state titles—more than any other district in California—and 19 national championships. these achievements stand as a testament to the district’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence. “What impresses me this year is we have so many problems…it’s just so sad,” reflected LAUSD Board President scott Schmerelson. “yet we still come together to celebrate academic excellence, and that is very crucial.”

The Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies (SOCES) has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to academic excellence. For the second consecutive year,the school has clinched the coveted Superintendent’s Trophy at the 43rd Annual LAUSD Academic Decathlon. This remarkable feat serves as a testament to SOCES’s dedication to fostering a vibrant learning surroundings where intellectual curiosity thrives.
Beyond the trophies and accolades, the Academic Decathlon offers a platform for students to explore their passions, develop critical thinking skills, and delve into challenging subjects. This year’s theme, the American Revolution, ignited a spark of enthusiasm in many students. Apollo colligan, a junior at The Science Academy STEM Magnet who joined the Decathlon team on a whim, found himself captivated by the year’s focus. “I think definitely the ability for dedication and hard work that this requires is 100% applicable to regular school work,” he remarked, highlighting the valuable life skills cultivated through the Decathlon experience.
Behind every accomplished team is a dedicated coach, and SOCES is fortunate to have Mr. Ben Parks, whose unwavering support and guidance have propelled his students to new heights.”These kids, they have the knack for it, and they are excelling at such a high level,” he said with pride. “And it’s just a pleasure to watch them grow.”
Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho emphasized the importance of the students’ engagement with pressing global issues like climate change, particularly considering recent wildfires in the region. “They’re tackling some of the world’s most pressing issues, you know, climate change,” he said. “Considering what our community went through recently with the wildfires, with strong winds, many attributing the severity of those fires to climate change. I’m very proud that our students are leading the way.”

I believe the foundation I’ve built here will serve me well in the years to come,” Sophia concludes,confidently looking towards a radiant future.
