think about your favorite everyday object. That trusty coffee mug, the comfy headphones you rock, even the seemingly mundane spatula you use to flip pancakes – each one of these items is the result of careful thought and meticulous planning by industrial designers.
But what is industrial design, really? its the art and science of shaping products from their initial concept to their final form.
Dan Harden, CEO and Principal Designer of the award-winning San Francisco-based firm Whipsaw, provides insight: “Every clever gadget and life-simplifying tool had an industrial designer who spent hours thinking about the components that make it so clever or life-simplifying.”
He’s right. Industrial designers are the unsung heroes behind the products we rely on daily. They consider everything – from ergonomics and functionality to aesthetics and sustainability.
Hailing from a firm that has designed a diverse range of products, Harden’s perspective reflects the depth and breadth of industrial design.
the Moby Spout Cover: A Toddler Bathtime Must-Have
For parents with toddlers, the iconic blue rubber whale perched atop their bath spout might look familiar. That’s Moby, the brainchild of designer Scott Henderson, born in 2008 as a product for Skip Hop.Moby’s simple yet ingenious design offers a welcome solution to a common bathtime dilemma – the potential for little ones to bump their heads on the sharp edges of the spouts.
Henderson’s creation, crafted from a soft, latex-free material known as TPE, snugly fits over the spout, providing a protective cushion for curious toddlers.
The Moby spout cover has become a bathroom staple for countless families, offering a small yet essential element of safety and comfort during bathtime. It’s a testament to Henderson’s design philosophy, which prioritizes both functionality and imaginative appeal, making an everyday experience a bit more enjoyable for both parents and children.
smiling Through Innovation: The Design Philosophy Behind Everyday Essentials
Scott Henderson, a renowned industrial designer, believes that a well-designed product should evoke joy. “If a product makes you smile,” he asserts, “it becomes easier to use.” He’s transformed this philosophy into a successful career, crafting objects that seamlessly blend functionality with whimsy.
Henderson’s creations have graced kitchens and bathrooms across the globe. His iconic Sunbeam Mixmaster stand mixer, a staple in many a home, embodies his approach. He sees design as a process of solving everyday problems in an enjoyable way.
Take the Sunbeam Mixmaster, for instance. Henderson envisioned a mixer that was not just powerful, but also approachable and visually appealing. The result is a classic piece of kitchenware that has become a cultural icon. Henderson’s playful spirit shines through in his design choices, such as the mix master’s cheerful color palette and rounded contours.
Henderson’s creations are not limited to small appliances. His commitment to design excellence extends to larger products as well. He has designed everything from dustpans to T-fal measuring spoons and even kettles for Chantal. Each object exemplifies his belief that utility should never be at odds with aesthetics.
the enduring popularity of Henderson’s designs speaks volumes about his talent. He understands that a well-designed product is more than just a functional object; it’s an object that brings joy and ease to everyday life.
“I think it was a first-of-its-kind product that combined problem-solving innovation with an intrinsic soul and an iconic personality,” he says of the Sunbeam Mixmaster, showcasing his ability to infuse personality into even the most practical products.
From Kitchen Gadgets to Smart Home Gyms: Inside the World of Whipsaw Design
Whipsaw,a renowned product design firm, has a knack for crafting innovative solutions that seamlessly blend form and function. Their work graces kitchens, gyms, and even faces of celebrities, proving their impact transcends mere aesthetics. Whipsaw’s design philosophy centers around simplicity and user-centricity. “One approach I like is to design the object around one big idea, rather of 10 small ones. When someone can easily understand the purpose and the way to use a tool, that’s a happy feeling,” explains Scott henderson, Whipsaw’s Founder and Chief Creative Officer. He believes a successful design isn’t just visually appealing; it empowers users. “The experience is as much sensed as it is seen. The product makes them feel smart, and when they feel smart, they smile,” he adds.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented a unique challenge, forcing a global disruption in supply chains.Rather of shying away, whipsaw embraced innovation. Partnering with product development company ZVerse, they tackled the urgent need for personal protective equipment (PPE). The result was the ZShield, a revolutionary neck-mounted face shield designed specifically for frontline workers and public figures alike. ”The shield was produced in North Carolina, instead of overseas,” Henderson proudly states. “We bypassed the supply chain backlog,” he adds, highlighting their agility and commitment to finding solutions.
The ZShield wasn’t just a response to a crisis; it became a symbol of innovation and resourcefulness. Celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, and Michelle Obama were seen sporting the shield, further elevating its profile. Whipsaw’s success with the ZShield exemplifies their ability to translate ideas into tangible, impactful products.
The evolution from face shields to cutting-edge fitness equipment showcases Whipsaw’s diverse portfolio. Their collaboration with fitness company Tonal resulted in a smart home gym that has garnered widespread acclaim. Fans like Serena williams and Lebron James attest to its effectiveness. instead of bulky weights, Tonal utilizes digital weights powered by electromagnets, making it a sleek and space-saving solution.
Whipsaw’s designs aren’t solely driven by technical innovation; they are deeply rooted in user experience. “it’s awesome to see your design out in the real world succeeding and making people happy,” says Whipsaw’s Design director, Harden. “It starts with a thought that makes your heart jump. Followed by a sketch, then a computer rendering, then a model. Seeing a concept come to life like that’s a sublime experience.” This passion for the creative process shines through in every product Whipsaw brings to life, from their work with water bottle company Owala, whose FreeSip bottle was named one of TIME’s Best Inventions in 2023 and The New York Times’ best Water Bottles in 2024, to their innovative kitchen appliances like the Sunbeam Mixmaster.
