Get ready for a movie night unlike any other! Street Food Cinema, the Los Angeles-based organization that has revolutionized outdoor moviegoing with its unique blend of food trucks, live music, and cinematic experiences, is turning 10. To mark this milestone, they’re pulling out all the stops with a special two-night festivity: Whiplash Live in concert.
Partnering with TIL Events, Street Food Cinema will transport audiences to the electrifying world of Damien Chazelle’s 2014 academy Award-winning masterpiece, Whiplash, at the prestigious Saban Theater in beverly Hills on February 7th and 8th, 2025. Imagine watching the film unfold on the big screen while a live 18-piece jazz orchestra – commanded by none other than Academy Award-winning composer Justin Hurwitz himself – performs his unforgettable score. It’s a sensory feast that promises to elevate the experience to an entirely new level.
Street Food cinema’s journey began in 2012, when founders Heather Hope-Allison and Steve sought to breathe new life into the classic movie night experience. Their vision quickly resonated with Angelenos who craved a unique, interactive way to enjoy cinema under the stars. Over the years, they built a loyal community around shared experiences and a love for good food, good music, and great films. when the pandemic struck, their innovative drive-in events became a vital lifeline, offering a glimmer of normalcy and connection during a time of isolation.
This anniversary celebration is a testament to Street Food Cinema’s enduring impact. “Live-to-film” concerts offer a unique dimension to moviegoing, immersing audiences in the soul of the film in a way that’s truly unforgettable.
Reclaiming the Magic of the Movies: The Street Food Cinema Experience
Imagine a lively outdoor plaza, the aroma of gourmet food trucks mingling with the excitement of an iconic movie about to begin. Alex Reeds settle in, their anticipation growing as live music sets the stage for an unforgettable evening under the stars. This is the magic that Heather Hope-allison, co-founder of Street Food Cinema, has been crafting for over a decade.
Inspired by the rising popularity of gourmet food trucks in 2012, Hope-Allison envisioned a cinematic experience that combined the joy of picnic-style dining with the allure of classic films. “We wanted to create a picnic-ready outdoor movie experience that celebrated the diverse flavors of Los Angeles,” she explains. The addition of live music from up-and-coming bands, she adds, “really rounded out the experience” and solidified Street Food Cinema’s unique appeal.
In a city saturated with entertainment options, staying relevant requires more than just a projector and popcorn. Street Food Cinema has cultivated a devoted community by fostering a sense of belonging and offering something truly special.
“We’ve become a beloved tradition,” Hope-Allison shares. “We host everything from birthday parties and family reunions to corporate outings and even marriage proposals.” The company also partners with studios to create exclusive fan experiences, marking film and television premieres and anniversaries. They even host “Live to Film” events, where a live orchestra performs the soundtrack in front of the big screen, offering a truly immersive experience like no other.
These special events often feature unique touches that elevate the experience beyond the ordinary. Imagine a DeLorean parked for a “Back to the Future” night, live swordplay during a screening of “The Princess Bride,” or attendees channeling their inner Lloyd Dobler with boomboxes at a “Say Anything” showing.
However, the magic of Street Food Cinema isn’t just about spectacle. “The biggest challenge we faced was COVID,” Hope-Allison admits. “We had to adapt quickly and find new ways to bring people together.” They pivoted to drive-in experiences, collaborating with the city to ensure all safety guidelines were met.
“We were proud to produce the first major studio drive-in premiere for ‘Nomadland’ with Searchlight Pictures at the Rose Bowl,” she reflects.
Hope-Allison emphasizes the demanding nature of event production, particularly outdoors. “Deadlines are crucial,” she stresses. “Thousands of people rely on us for a seamless experience: the music, the movie, the food and drinks, all happening in an environment that frequently lacks basic infrastructure. It takes meticulous planning and teamwork to pull it off.”
Street Food Cinema is more than just movies under the stars; it’s a testament to the enduring power of shared experiences and the importance of community.
A Celebration of Cinema and Community: Street Food Cinema’s Lasting Impact
The allure of cinema under the open sky, transforming ordinary spaces into unusual realms of shared experiences, is a magic that Street Food Cinema, a cherished Los Angeles institution, has expertly cultivated for over a decade. This unique blend seamlessly weaves the love for film with the vibrant flavors of diverse culinary offerings, creating an unforgettable experience that resonates deeply with its community.
“Something doesn’t go as planned, we have to pivot. The show must go on. We are very proud of the amount of hard work and heart our team puts into our events to make them seem flawless,” says Heather Hope-Allison, a driving force behind Street food Cinema’s enduring success.
The commitment to creating an unparalleled cinematic experience extends far beyond simply selecting and screening films. Hope-Allison shares their dedication to making dreams a reality, “For a long time, we waited for Star Wars to become available for outdoor screenings, then finally in 2017 it did. And thus, we did it! We’re working on a Studio Ghibli outdoor event, that would be magic.”
This dedication to creating lasting memories is interwoven into the very fabric of Street Food Cinema’s philosophy. Hope-Allison envisions a future where their impact resonates for generations to come, “We hope that doesn’t happen [Street Food Cinema disappearing]. But we’ve created some unforgettable memories for the community over the last 14 years. And we hope to be part of Los Angeles’s cultural fabric for generations to come. We certainly intend to continue to build the street Food Cinema community in Los Angeles and Southern California, and we’d love to expand into Northern California, say Oakland or San Francisco soon.”
Street Food Cinema’s enduring passion shines through, leaving an indelible mark not just on the screen but also on the hearts and minds of the communities it serves.

From Gourmet Trucks to Cinematic Magic: The Genesis of Street Food Cinema
Q: What inspired you to create Street Food Cinema, and how did the concept evolve from gourmet food trucks to the immersive cinematic experience it is today?
A: The idea was sparked by the rise of gourmet food trucks in 2012. We wanted to combine that delicious culinary experience with the joy of outdoor movie nights. It seemed like a natural pairing, and adding live music created a truly vibrant atmosphere.
