White House: Trump to Impose 25% Tariffs on Canada and Mexico

“Starting tomorrow, these tariffs will be in force,” Kerolain Levita, the press secretary of the White House, told reporters.

Tariffs are the answer to three countries that allow illegal drugs to enter the US, the press secretary said.

Initially, Trump wanted to set tariffs on the first day of the Presidency, but later set a deadline for February 1.

Penalty measures can still be prevented if last -minute conversations were successfully implemented.

Already on the day of the inauguration on January 20, Trump warned that 25% of customs tariffs for Canada and Mexico could be set on February 1.

A few hours after the transfer of the post, he threatened both major US trading partners, accusing them of the inability to stop illegal immigration and drug smuggling to the US.

“We are thinking about 25% for Mexico and Canada, because they allow a huge number of people to enter – Canada is also a very bad malicious user – a huge number of people and import fentanyl,” Trump said in the oval office.

Given Ambassador Davis’s assertion that tariffs are often ineffective at achieving thier intended goals, while possibly harming consumer prices, supply chains, and international ⁣relations, what specific ancient examples could best illustrate this⁤ concept?

Tomorrow Brings Tariffs: An Interview with Trade Policy Expert Ambassador Davis

The United States is set to impose 25% tariffs⁢ on‌ imports from Canada and Mexico, beginning tomorrow, February 1st. The move, largely anticipated since President Trump’s inauguration, has been framed as a response to these countries’ perceived failure to curb illegal drug trafficking and immigration.

Ambassador John Davis, a⁣ former trade negotiator⁢ in the obama administration and current senior fellow at ⁣the Center for International Economic Policy, spoke exclusively with Archyde to shed light ‍on the potential consequences of these tariffs.

Ambassador davis, what are your initial thoughts on the impending tariffs?

“The Trump administration is ⁢attempting to leverage trade policy to address broader national security concerns, ⁢specifically illegal ⁣immigration and the drug⁣ trade. while understandable on a symbolic⁤ level, such action risks triggering a tit-for-tat escalation with Canada⁢ and Mexico, who have already expressed their displeasure.

History has shown that tariffs rarely achieve their intended goals, frequently enough leading to higher prices for consumers, disruptions in supply chains, and retaliatory measures from trading partners. It’s a blunt instrument that⁣ may do more harm than good.

Beyond the stated reasons, what other economic considerations might be at play here?

“It’s difficult to ignore the potential political motivations behind these⁢ tariffs.President Trump has made demands on Canada and Mexico for trade concessions, particularly concerning the north American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Imposing tariffs could be a way to pressure them into more favorable negotiations, even if it comes at a cost to american businesses ‍and consumers.

Could these tariffs impact the US-Mexico and US-Canada relationships in ‌a lasting way?

“Certainly, this move damages trust and cooperation between these long-standing‍ allies. It’s unimaginable that Canada and Mexico wouldn’t respond in kind. Retaliatory tariffs could affect various American industries, especially agriculture and manufacturing. This⁣ could have a ripple⁢ effect across the North American economy and undermine regional stability.

Ambassador Davis, what message would you offer to the American people on this issue?

“I urge Americans to ⁤stay informed about ⁣the potential consequences ⁤of ‌these tariffs. While the administration claims it’s a necessary⁤ step to ‍protect national security, we must be discerning about the true‍ costs and benefits.
