Residents overwhelmingly support a speed reduction to 60km/h through the village and 80km/h for the rest of the highway.

Despite this widespread support and years of requests, change has been painfully slow. While the speed reductions were initially planned for January 27, 2025, they have been delayed until the third quarter of 2025. This protracted wait has fueled frustration among residents who feel their concerns are being ignored. Shortley acknowledges the government’s recent rule change as a contributing factor, but places significant responsibility on local council staff, stating, ” Although frustrated with the government’s rule, which was ‘unsympathetic’ to the desires of local communities, he blames council staff for the lack of results after years of requests.”

Meanwhile, a similar push for safer speeds is underway on the Moutere Highway and its adjoining Neudorf Road. Nathan Silcock, chairperson of the Moutere Hills Residents Association, believes a reduction from 100km/h to 80km/h is a “no-brainer.” Like Shortley, Silcock expresses disappointment with the delay, highlighting the sense of urgency felt by residents.

Dicker and Goddard Roads, which led to residential areas, would be downgraded to 40km/h from their current 50km/h limit. Rush Lane,currently a 100km/h zone,would also see a significant reduction,dropping to 50km/h.

While speeding hasn’t historically been a major concern in collingwood, a recent rise in traffic due to nearby housing developments has heightened local anxieties. “A nearby housing growth has increased the amount of traffic and children in the area, making vehicle speeds a ‘growing issue’,” Gully believes. “So lowering the speed limits now made ‘perfect sense.’”

Similar concerns drive proposed changes in Ruby Bay, where residents are eager to see safer speeds implemented around schools. “It really shouldn’t have much to do with the Government; it shoudl be about people who live there,” remarked a local resident, expressing a desire for localized solutions to address local concerns.

Several other roads, identified as high-risk, will also see reductions in speed limits. These include Edwards Road, dovedale Road, Main Road Lower Moutere, Queen Victoria Road, Paton road, and McShane Road. The aim is to improve safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.

Variable 30km/h zones around schools, mandated by government regulations, are not included in this current consultation. However, residents can expect to engage in discussions about further speed reductions on rural residential roads, urban roads lacking footpaths, winding and narrow unsealed roads, and specific roads identified for targeted adjustments.

Public consultation closes on March 2nd, providing a valuable possibility for residents to contribute to shaping safer roads in their communities.
