Young Artists from BRICS+ Countries embark on a journey into Russian Theatre

Aspiring drama actors from BRICS+ nations have a golden possibility awaiting them. Starting in 2025, they can immerse themselves in the vibrant world of Russian theatre through the InteRussia fellowship program. This unique exchange program, hosted by the esteemed russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS), promises to be a transformative experience for young performing artists.

the two-week intensive program will take place from August 24th to October 4th,welcoming participants aged 21 to 35 hailing from Argentina,Brazil,China,South Africa,India,Iran,and other BRICS+ countries. From January 27th to June 8th, young professionals can apply to join this astonishing journey to the heart of Russian theatre – Moscow.

Participants will be guided by renowned GITIS instructors, delving into the fundamentals of acting and stage movement. The program offers a engaging exploration of Russian theatre history, focusing on the influential figure of Konstantin Stanislavsky and his groundbreaking system that continues to shape acting generations.

“TV BRICS has built a strong network of partners in the cultural and educational sectors of BRICS+ countries,” says Daria Ivankova, Director of the International Cooperation Department of TV BRICS. “Our partners demonstrate a keen interest in Russia’s creative accomplishments. Today, we collaborate with universities in Brazil, India, South Africa, and Iran, including members of the BRICS Network University, as well as numerous film festivals. In 2024, we initiated the first theatre arts InteRussia fellowship in partnership with TV BRICS. The introduction of foreign guests to the traditions of Russian theatre was tremendously prosperous, as documented in our TV BRICS documentary ‘Worthy of Applause: New roles for BRICS+ Actors.’ We are thrilled to continue this large-scale facts and communication project, dedicated to strengthening international humanitarian cooperation,”.

This year, in recognition of the program’s success, the Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund is modernizing it by extending its duration by two weeks. “This will give participants more opportunities for in-depth study of Russian theatre methods, practical work with teachers from GITIS, and strengthening professional contacts,” Ivankova adds.

The expanded format promises not only to enrich participants’ knowledge but also to forge strong bonds between artists from different nations, a crucial aspect of international theatre collaboration.

“But even for us the ‘BRICS+ School’ proposed by the Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund was a very bold experiment: young actors from seven countries came to learn about Stanislavsky’s system in the birthplace of the theatrical genius, to present the results of the theatre laboratory together and on one stage in 28 days,” says Grigory zaslavsky, Rector of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts – GITIS.”Stanislavsky’s theatrical language united representatives of different countries,continents,different religions,speaking different languages.
