Edmonton-Strathcona Showdown: Nenshi vs. UCP

As the Edmonton-Strathcona riding prepares for a pivotal byelection, Archyde sits down with former Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, now leader of Alberta’s NDP, to discuss his plans and vision for the province.

Q: Mr. Nenshi, thank you for joining us today. You’ve been described as an eager contender, ready to tackle the challenges facing Alberta. What specifically drives this eagerness?

Nenshi: Albertans are facing big issues right now – from ensuring our kids have access to world-class education to making sure our healthcare system is there for us when we need it. I’ve always been driven by the belief that government should be a force for positive change, and I’m eager to bring that approach to Edmonton-Strathcona,”the beating heart of our party.”

Q: You’ve criticized Premier Danielle Smith’s approach. What aspects of her leadership do you believe the province needs more of, and less of?

Nenshi: I believe Alberta deserves a government that is focused on supporting strong public education and world-class healthcare. I think we need more collaboration with all Albertans, not just those who happen to agree with the UCP. Less divisiveness, less cynicism.

“Albertans deserve better. They deserve a government that is focused on supporting strong public education, world-class public health care, and a vibrant and diverse economy,”

said Nenshi.

the UCP, though, has pledged to forge a different path, emphasizing a grassroots approach.

“Our candidate will actually be from Edmonton and care about the issues of Edmontonians,” stated UCP spokesperson Dave Prisco.

while acknowledging the June 30th deadline for calling a byelection stipulated by Alberta election laws, Premier Smith emphasized the importance of local representation.

“It’s vital that all Albertans are being served and represented by their local MLA,” she stressed.

With the legislature scheduled to reconvene in late february for the 2025 budget and recess in late May,the upcoming byelection in Edmonton-Strathcona promises to be a pivotal moment in Alberta’s political landscape
