BREAKING: €286m Kildare Business Park Gets Green Light

Data Center Campus to Spark Growth and Innovation in Kildare

An Bord Pleanála has given the green light to a major €286 million project at the Kildare Innovation Development in Leixlip. This aspiring development is poised to revolutionize the region’s landscape, bringing meaningful economic benefits and creating thousands of new jobs. Construction Services (CIS) estimates that upon completion, the project will generate an remarkable 3,000 permanent jobs, injecting much-needed vitality into the local economy. Work is already underway, with the Client Control Building (KIC 110kV Substation – CCB building) progressing steadily.

Spanning a total of approximately 76,225 sqm, the project encompasses a series of state-of-the-art data centers, ranging in size from 13,225 sqm to 21,000 sqm. Thes towering structures, reaching up to 16.5 meters at their highest point, will contribute significantly to ireland’s rapidly expanding technology infrastructure.

Sustainability is deeply ingrained in the project’s design. All buildings will be equipped with solar PV panels on their roofs and green walls along designated elevations. The new deep tech buildings (A1 and A2) incorporate an array of lasting features, including thoughtful service yard areas, loading docks, car parking, access roads, security fencing, and landscaping. These buildings will also utilize rainwater harvesting tanks and green roofs over office spaces.

The project includes a comprehensive infrastructure network, encompassing car parking, access roads, security fencing, gate houses, and landscaping. Each data center (B1, C1, C2, and C3) will feature dedicated data halls, admin blocks for offices, break rooms, loading docks, storage, and support areas. They will also house a variety of mechanical and electrical plant areas and structures, including battery storage rooms and mechanical rooms.

A significant component of the project involves the construction of a new 110kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation adjacent to the existing 110kV Rinawade substation. This substation will connect to existing overhead lines via short underground cables. Equipped with six transformers, the new facility will provide a reliable power source for the data centers.

Power Grid Upgrades: Demolishing the Old, Building the New

The energy landscape is undergoing major transformations as plans for infrastructure upgrades take shape. One key project involves a complete overhaul of the power grid in the Rinawade region. This change includes the decommissioning of the existing 110kv Rinawade substation, a landmark structure that has served the community for years.

In its place, a brand new substation will rise, featuring advanced control building technology and a two-story building dedicated to GIS – Geographic Information Systems. These advancements will enhance grid efficiency, reliability, and resilience. The new facility will be enclosed within a 2.4-meter high fenced compound, further ensuring security and safety.

While the demolition and removal of the old substation mark the end of an era, it also signifies a step forward. These upgrades are crucial to meeting the growing energy demands of the region and ensuring a stable and modern power supply for years to come.

Kildare Innovation Campus: A Beacon of Growth and Innovation

Kildare Innovation Campus (KIC) is poised to become a major player in Ireland’s burgeoning tech sector. Recent developments, including a massive data center project and ambitious expansion plans, are transforming the campus into a vibrant hub for innovation, collaboration, and economic growth.

A pivotal moment came with An Bord Pleanála’s approval of a €286 million data center project. This substantial investment, spearheaded by a consortium of international tech giants, signals a powerful vote of confidence in KIC’s potential. “This project is set to transform the landscape of the region, both literally and economically,” says Eimear O’Sullivan, representing KIC. “It’s a significant investment in Ireland’s data center infrastructure.”

The impact of this project extends beyond bricks and mortar. “We anticipate that the project, once completed, will generate thousands of new jobs throughout its construction and operational phases,” O’sullivan outlines. The influx of high-tech companies and their substantial investments promise to stimulate local businesses and invigorate Kildare’s economy.

Earlier this year, KIC announced a €2.4 billion expansion plan, aiming to create 3,000 new jobs by attracting new tenants to fill spaces vacated by HP. This strategic move leverages KIC’s prime location, state-of-the-art facilities, and the soon-to-be-operational data center to entice businesses looking to establish or expand their presence in Ireland. Construction and refurbishment are underway, with active engagement with local communities and authorities to ensure a seamless development process.

Sustainability is at the forefront of KIC’s vision. The new data center project incorporates innovative cooling techniques to minimize its environmental footprint. Additionally, KIC is demonstrably committed to enhancing energy efficiency and promoting sustainable practices across all its operations.

Looking ahead, O’Sullivan envisions KIC as “a thriving hub for tech innovation and collaboration”, attracting a diverse range of industries and fostering a dynamic ecosystem that allows businesses to flourish and create meaningful employment opportunities. “I’m excited about the prospects and can’t wait to see Kildare’s tech horizon unfold,” she concludes.

With its ambitious plans and unwavering commitment to sustainability and innovation, Kildare Innovation Campus is rapidly emerging as a key driver of economic growth and technological advancement in Ireland.
