But I also see this as an opportunity to shine a light on everyone who has supported and been a part of this journey with me. I stand on the shoulders of many, and none of this would be possible without their love, dedication, and hard work.
AS: Your career in Swedish football spans over three decades, from being a formidable player to an inspirational leader as a coach and national team manager.What keeps you driven and passionate after all these years?
MDL: That’s a great question, Anna.I think it’s simply my love for the game. Football has been a constant force in my life, and it’s a passion that’s only grown stronger over time. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to wear many hats within this sport, and each role has brought new challenges and rewards. But at the core of it, I’m driven by a desire to win, to inspire, and to make a positive impact on the lives of those around me.
AS: Speaking of wins, your resume is nothing short of unusual. From lifting World Cup and Olympic trophies as a player to guiding the Swedish national team to unprecedented heights as a coach, which achievement stands out the most to you?
MDL: That’s a tough one, Anna. There are so many incredible moments, but if I had to choose one, it would be the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. To see our team come so close to winning gold,to push the boundaries of what was thought possible,and to ultimately secure the silver medal – it was truly something special. The unity, determination, and love within that team were unparalleled, and it’s a memory that will stay with me forever.

MDL: First and foremost, it’s about instilling belief and fostering a strong team culture. Every player on the team needs to know that they matter,that their contributions are valued,and that together,they can achieve greatness.It’s also crucial to embrace a growth mindset, to learn from every experience – both wins and losses – and to continually strive to improve. And of course, we’ve had incredible support along the way, from the Swedish Football Association, our fans, and the entire football community.
AS: Looking ahead, what are your hopes for the future of women’s football both in Sweden and globally?
MDL: My biggest hope is that we continue to see growth and progress, not just in terms of visibility and investment, but also in the progress and opportunities for women in all aspects of the game – as players, coaches, administrators, and more. I want young girls to look at women’s football and see a future filled with possibilities, where they can achieve their dreams and make a lasting impact on the sport.
