Archyde (A): Today, we have the pleasure of welcoming Tom Leighton, a photographer and digital artist whose work transcends the ordinary, transforming mundane plants into objects of wonder. Welcome, Tom.
Tom Leighton (TL): Thank you, I’m delighted to be here.
A: Your “Fabled Gardens II” collection is a captivating journey into a surreal, botanical world. What inspired you to create this unique artistic lens?
TL: Nature has always been a significant source of inspiration for me. I’ve always found beauty in the intricate detail and geometry of leaves and flowers, but I wanted to do more then just capture their appearance. I wanted to evoke emotion, to make people see these familiar plants in a new light. That’s where the surreal, otherworldly elements came in.
A: Your technique is mesmerizing. How do you achieve those vibrant hues and the stark contrasts between light and darkness in your images?
TL: it’s a combination of several factors. First, I spend a lot of time observing my subjects in different lighting conditions to understand how they interact with light. Then,I use long exposure photography to capture the play of light and shadow. In post-processing,I enhance these elements to create the ethereal,glowing effects you see in my images.
A: One image,in particular,stands out – the striking orange and teal glow emanating from the center of a giant rhubarb leaf. How did you capture that effect?
TL: (Laughs) That image was a happy accident, honestly. I was experimenting with different light sources and positions,and when I saw the way the light was hitting that leaf,I knew I had something special. It was like a burst of otherworldly color, and I just ran with it.
A: Your images are currently only available as digital art. Can you tell us more about the upcoming print releases you’ve teased on your social platforms?
TL: Absolutely. While I believe there’s a certain immersive quality to experiencing my work digitally, I also understand the value of having a physical print to appreciate and own. I’m working on releasing a series of high-quality, archival prints that will allow viewers to bring a piece of the “Fabled Gardens” into their home. A: That’s something to look forward to. Tom,what advice would you give to aspiring artists looking to create their own unique style?
