Council Green Lights Upgrade Works at Trump Doonbeg

Trump Doonbeg Golf Resort Gets Green Light for Expansion

After months of review and careful consideration, Clare County Council has finally given the green light for extensive upgrades at Trump Doonbeg golf Resort. This momentous decision, announced on Wednesday, paves the way for TIGL Ireland Enterprises, the resort’s management company, to move forward with its aspiring expansion project.

The council’s approval comes after a thorough examination of the proposal, which included 13 stringent conditions designed to minimize any potential environmental impact and ensure the well-being of the local community.

One important hurdle cleared was the concern surrounding the Vertigo angustior, a protected snail species found in abundance at the resort and nearby Shannon Airport. Ecologists supporting the project assured the council that the expansion plans would not harm this vulnerable species. This reassurance was particularly critical,as the council previously halted the project last April due to these concerns, highlighting the importance placed on environmental responsibility throughout the entire process.

Originally, plans submitted in February 2023 envisioned transforming Doughmore House, currently an office space, into a vibrant leisure facility featuring pickleball courts, a basketball court, and soft play areas. However, revised plans submitted in November streamlined the scope, eliminating any work on Doughmore House altogether. This adjustment, according to a planning report, considerably reduced the project’s overall environmental footprint.

The resort’s commitment to protecting the Vertigo angustior was even recognized by Donald Trump himself in 2014, shortly after acquiring the property. He declared his intention to be a “friend to the Vertigo angustior” at the site, underscoring a sense of environmental stewardship within the Trump organization’s framework for managing the resort.

This recent approval marks a significant milestone for trump Doonbeg, following a record-breaking year for the resort in 2023. operating profits surged more than double, reaching €2.06 million. revenues also experienced a healthy 12% increase, reaching €16.12 million. This success, according to general manager Joe Russell, is a testament to the resort’s “upward trajectory of business growth and profitability.” He highlighted that 2023 has been the most prosperous year as the resort opened in 2002 and since the Trump Organization took control in 2014.

The Trump Organization’s significant investment of over €40 million in the resort since 2014 reflects their unwavering confidence in its future.

“We are pleased with the planning permission as it will now assist us with the ongoing growth of our business and operations,” stated Joe Russell, General Manager of Trump Doonbeg. The approval comes with 13 conditions, demonstrating a commitment to responsible advancement. “We will proceed carefully, ensuring we protect the local habitat and, most importantly, our fragile friends, the Vertigo angustior snails,” added Russell.

Streamlining our plans allows us to achieve our goals while being more respectful of the local ecosystem,” explained Russell.

The resort has experienced remarkable growth, with 2023 marking its most prosperous year since opening. “We’ve invested heavily in enhancing the guest experiance, and it’s clear that our efforts are paying off,” said Russell. “Our team’s dedication, coupled with the resort’s unique offerings, has drawn more visitors, leading to record-breaking revenues and profits.” The continued investment from the Trump Organization, totaling over €40 million since 2014, has also played a pivotal role in the resort’s success.
