Reliable high-speed internet access is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity. Recognizing this growing need, GigaBeam Networks, a rural broadband internet provider, is working tirelessly to bridge the digital divide in Montgomery County, Virginia. Year two of their aspiring broadband expansion project is in full swing, bringing high-speed internet to underserved communities.
The project began in Elliston and Shawsville, wiht crews successfully connecting numerous homes and businesses last fall. Now, GigaBeam’s focus has shifted to Lafayette, Alleghany Springs, and other northern Montgomery County communities.
Eric Workman, GigaBeam’s chief Strategic Officer, emphasizes that this initiative is about more than just browsing social media or checking emails. “When you think about what that does is outreach to those communities,” he explains, “It’s tremendous because it not only gives them access to educational access, health care, business, working from home. We’re excited about what this is going to do for the communities,” Workman added.
The project entails laying hundreds of miles of fiber optic cable, a task that presents unique challenges due to the rugged, mountainous terrain. “Whether it’s the crossings of interstates, crossings of railroads over and under both of those entities, as well as crossing various mountains, anytime you go through those types of environments, there’s always going to be little challenges you have to address,” Workman acknowledges.
Despite these obstacles, the progress is remarkable. It’s projected that nearly 12,000 homes and businesses will have reliable high-speed internet access once the project is completed,a significant milestone for the region.
With the end of 2023 in sight, GigaBeam Networks is steadfast to fulfill its promise of delivering high-speed internet to the heart of Montgomery County, paving the way for a brighter, more connected future.
