Recent research by insurance firm Phoenix Group has revealed a fascinating insight into the UK’s regional employment landscape. Their index, focused on “fulfilling, financially rewarding, long-term employment,” crowned the South-West as the top region for jobseekers.
This accolade is well-deserved, as the South-West, home to vibrant cities like Bath, Bristol, and Exeter, boasts high job satisfaction and financial security. It also scores well in terms of employment confidence and economic activity.
While London, unsurprisingly, leads in financial security and economic activity, it falls behind in job satisfaction. Interestingly, Londoners are less confident about staying in work longer-term compared to other regions, perhaps impacting their overall career satisfaction.
The North-West secured the third spot in the rankings, highlighting a clear regional divide. Phoenix Group’s analysis indicates a noticeable imbalance in economic activity, with London and the South-east leading the pack while Yorkshire, Wales, and the North-East trailing behind.
“Good quality, satisfying jobs matter to people of all ages, and better employment opportunities across the country are vital to drive the economic growth our country sorely needs,” emphasizes Catherine Foot, director of Phoenix Insights. She stresses the need for improved public employment support services and greater regional autonomy in designing localized solutions.
Despite London’s economic dominance and high career progression prospects, a stark contrast emerges in retirement confidence. A mere 43% of Londoners believe they can remain employed until age 70, compared to almost 90% of Scots, who feel confident working until 60, and 57% confidently stepping into their 70s.
“Making sure people across the UK have access to good, fulfilling work that they can remain in as long as they need, or want, is vital to tackling our widespread pension under-saving crisis, helping people earn and save for longer,” asserts Mike Ambery, retirement savings director at Phoenix company Standard Life.
These findings call for a national conversation on creating a more balanced and equitable employment landscape across the UK, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to not only secure financial stability but to find meaningful, long-lasting careers.

Archyde: Emmaraithe, thanks for joining us today. Let’s dive straight into it. yoru recent analysis crowned the South-West as the top region for job seekers. What makes it stand out?
Emmaraithe: Absolutely. The South-West’s all-round strong performance in job satisfaction, financial security, employment confidence, and economic activity sets it apart. Cities like Bath,Bristol, and Exeter are thriving hubs of chance.
Archyde: While London leads in financial security and economic activity, it lags behind in job satisfaction. Why do you think that is?
Emmaraithe: London’s fast-paced, competitive nature might contribute to less job satisfaction. High expectations and intense pressure to succeed could take a toll on overall career satisfaction.
Archyde: Catherine Foot, director of Phoenix Insights, stressed the need for improved public employment support services and regional autonomy. How can we achieve this?
Emmaraithe: Collaboration between local authorities, businesses, and education institutions is key. by understanding the specific needs of each region, we can tailor support services and training opportunities effectively.
archyde: The North-South divide in economic activity is stark. How can we bridge this gap and create a more balanced employment landscape across the UK?
Emmaraithe: Targeted investment in infrastructure and skills growth in less economically active regions can help. Encouraging businesses to establish or expand operations in these areas can also stimulate growth. But remember, it’s a complex issue that requires comprehensive, long-term solutions.
Archyde: Emmaraithe, your analysis reveals a significant difference in retirement confidence. Why might people in certain regions be more confident about their retirement plans?
Emmaraithe:dicrent job security, pension provision, and personal savings could all play a role. But it’s also worth considering the impact of local cost of living, housing market dynamics, and public services on retirement planning.
