Home Exercise Companies Harvesting Your Sensitive Data: Peloton, NordicTrack Among Those Targeted

Your Home Gym Data: Who’s Watching?

The pandemic ushered in an era of home fitness, catapulting companies like Peloton and NordicTrack to unprecedented heights. But amidst this surge in popularity, a critical question arises: Just how much are these fitness giants collecting about you, beyond the basic details like height and age?

A recent examination by Consumer Reports into the privacy practices of 10 popular fitness brands revealed some unsettling trends. While companies often collect basic user facts, many delve deeper, gathering data that encompasses pregnancy status, dietary habits, and, in a especially eyebrow-raising instance, even potential olfactory data from BowFlex.Although Consumer Reports couldn’t confirm BowFlex’s active collection of smell-related data, their privacy policy raises serious concerns.

“The worry is that medical information would be treated the same as anything else, like shopping habits,” explains Steven Blair, Consumer Reports’ security test program leader. “These policies are written in a very, very broad way.”

Blair emphasizes that while user data is commonly employed for targeted advertising, the extent of data sharing and the security measures employed by these companies often remain shrouded in ambiguity.”some brands we examined claim adherence to privacy laws, but it’s crucial to delve deeper and understand exactly how our information is handled and protected.”

The fitness world is booming, and home workout platforms are leading the charge. But with convenience comes a price, especially when it comes to privacy. Consumer Reports recently shed light on the extent of data collected by popular fitness apps, raising vital questions about how our personal information is used and protected. To understand the implications, we spoke with dr. Eva Thompson,a renowned data privacy expert,to get her insights.

“While it’s generally clear that these platforms collect basic information like age and height, many gather much more detailed data than you might expect,” dr. Thompson explained. “This can include sensitive health information like pregnancy status and dietary habits. In some cases, companies even suggest the possibility of sensing your scent, as seen in BowFlex’s privacy policy.”

This raises a valid concern: what happens to all this information? “The primary use of this data is for targeted advertising,” Dr. Thompson revealed. “However, it can also be used to personalize your workouts. The concern arises from the broad language often used in privacy policies. It’s frequently enough unclear who this information is shared with or how secure these companies’ servers truly are,” she cautioned.

Given the potential misuse of sensitive workout videos, what steps can users take? Dr. Thompson advises:

  • Review Privacy Settings: Carefully examine the privacy settings within each app and prevent the sharing of information publicly.
  • Directly Contact Companies: While some apps may not offer direct data deletion, contacting the company directly can be an effective way to request removal.
  • Stay Informed: Familiarize yourself with each platform’s privacy policy and understand how your data is used and protected.

The responsibility for protecting our data lies with both individuals and companies. By being aware of the data collected, understanding how it’s used, and taking proactive steps to manage our privacy settings, we can navigate the world of connected fitness while safeguarding our personal information.

Navigating the data Privacy landscape: A Conversation with an Expert

They cite Tonal, a fitness company, as a notable example. “Tonal allows users to review and delete their video recordings,” Dr. Thompson adds.

However, Dr. Thompson cautions that simply meeting the bare minimum legal requirements shouldn’t be considered best practice. “We should expect more from these companies, especially considering the sensitive nature of the data they collect.”

So, what can we do to protect our privacy? Dr. Thompson recommends several proactive steps.

“First, always check the privacy settings of the apps you use to prevent your information from being shared publicly,” Dr. Thompson advises.”However, some apps may not give you the option to directly delete your data. In these cases, I recommend contacting the company directly to understand their data handling practices better. It’s also crucial to stay informed about updates to these policies.”

Dr. Thompson emphasizes the importance of being informed and vigilant. “I believe it’s crucial for users to be aware of the data these companies collect and to manage their privacy settings proactively,” they say. “It’s our personal duty to stay informed and take action to protect our own data. After all, our personal information is a valuable commodity, and we should expect companies to treat it with the respect and care it deserves.”
