Latvia’s National Guard has a new commander. Colonel Aivars Kryukovs assumes this crucial role today, January 22nd, following the departure of Brigadier General Kaspars Pudans.General Pudans concluded his tenure yesterday and will transition to lead the national Armed Forces (NBS) starting January 27th.
At a government meeting, Colonel Kryukovs outlined his key priorities. “My focus will be on implementing the national defense operational plan, developing the national defense concept, and creating a long-term development plan for the NBS,” he stated. This plan, he emphasized, will encompass increasing personnel, diversifying capabilities, and modernizing the guard’s arsenal. Civil protection will also be a cornerstone of his strategy, aiming to integrate its mechanisms more deeply into Latvian society.
Kryukovs expressed his conviction that the National Guard should expand its ranks from 10,000 to 12,000 personnel.
Colonel Kryukovs brings a wealth of experience to this demanding position. He has served in the National Armed Forces as 1997, holding command roles within the national Guard and the Land Forces. His international experience includes deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and also serving as deputy military representative for NATO/EU in Brussels. He also served as vice-rector at the Latvian National defense Academy.
His dedication to professional development is evident in his military education. He graduated from both the US Command and General Staff Collage and the Slovak National Defense Academy. He holds a bachelor’s degree in management science and is currently pursuing senior command education at the US Army War College.

Colonel Aivars Kryukovs: Indeed, those are the key tasks at hand. Firstly, we need to continually refine and update our operational plans, ensuring thay align with the evolving security landscape. Secondly, we must regularly review and update our national defense concept to maintain its relevance and effectiveness. Lastly, I’m committed to creating a comprehensive, long-term development plan for the NBS. This will involve strategic personnel planning, capability diversification, and asset modernization.
And I must emphasize, integrating civil protection mechanisms more deeply into our society will be a cornerstone of my strategy.

Colonel Kryukovs: With the complex security challenges we face today, and anticipated future threats, I believe our current strength may not be sufficient to meet all our defense needs effectively. To fill gaps and ensure robust defenses,we must boost our ranks. To achieve this, we’ll enhance recruitment efforts, investing in marketing campaigns and improving our incentive systems to attract and retain quality personnel.

Archyde: Your resume boasts an notable array of international experience and military education. how have these experiences influenced your approach to your new role?
Colonel Kryukovs: My international exposure, from deployments to NATO representation, has equipped me with a broader perspective on defense strategies. It’s shown me that effective defense isn’t just about military might, but also about diplomacy, alliances, and integration. These experiences, coupled with my continuous professional development, have refined my leadership skills and strategic viewpoint. I believe this will prove invaluable in guiding the National Guard through the challenges ahead.
Thoughts on Integration and Collaboration
Archyde: Lastly,Colonel,what’s one key area you’d like to see improved in our defense sector to better serve Latvia?
Colonel Kryukovs: I believe our defense sector could benefit greatly from even more robust integration and collaboration. Whether it’s between different military branches, with civil protection agencies, or with international allies, seamless cooperation is essential. By fostering this, we can enhance our collective capabilities and better protect latvia and its people.
