This critically acclaimed production is set to run from February 14th to 16th at the 905 Cole Theatre in Hollywood, with a stellar ensemble cast reprising their roles.
Archyde: Jeff, it’s a pleasure to have you with us today. Let’s dive right in.What inspired you to wriet “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Divorce”?
Jeff Gould: Thanks for having me. Well, like many of my plays, this one was born out of personal experience – in this case, my own divorce. I wanted to explore the complexities of relationships, the pain, the humor, and the unexpected moments of clarity that can arise when they’re falling apart.
Archyde: The play features three couples intertwined in unexpected conversations in a courthouse waiting room. How did you develop this unique setting?
Jeff Gould: I’ve always been fascinated by the way strangers can form deep connections in the most unlikely places. The courthouse waiting room seemed like the perfect neutral ground were these different couples could collide and share their stories honestly.
archyde: you’ve built a reputation for creating thought-provoking and entertaining plays. How would you describe your playwrighting style?
Jeff Gould: I like to think of my style as sincere and candid, yet unapologetically funny.I believe humor is one of the most powerful tools we have to explore complex emotions and make tough subjects more accessible. my goal is always to make audiences laugh, cry, and think – often all at once.
Archyde: Switching gears a bit, you’re also a seasoned professional poker player. How does your poker background influence your approach to playwrighting and theater?
Jeff Gould: Poker has taught me invaluable lessons about storytelling, reading people, and maintaining a calm presence under pressure. These skills have translated well to the theater world, whether it’s creating compelling narratives, understanding my audience, or navigating the ups and downs of production.
Archyde: Lastly, Jeff, if someone is on the fence about seeing “A funny Thing Happened on the Way to Divorce,” why should they come see this production?
Jeff Gould: This play is a celebration of the messiness and beauty of human relationships. It’s a reminder that even in our darkest moments, laughter and hope can still be found. Plus, who doesn’t love a good laugh on Valentine’s Day? Whether you’re going through a divorce,in a happy marriage,or anywhere in between,I think everyone can find something relatable and enjoyable in this show.
