Get ready for a throwback to 1980s cult classic action with a modern twist! Cineverse has announced that the reboot of The Toxic Avenger, starring Game of Thrones alum Peter Dinklage, will hit theaters in a wide, unrated release later this year.
Dinklage takes on the role of Winston Gooze, a lowly janitor who transforms into the titular mutant superhero, Toxie, after a gnarly accident. Armed with his trusty mop and fueled by righteous fury, Toxie takes on the city’s most nefarious villains, from ruthless gangsters to corrupt CEOs.
This new iteration of The Toxic Avenger is helmed by Macon Blair, known for his work in Blue Ruin and I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore. Reviews from critics who saw the film at Fantastic Fest in 2023 have hailed it as a refreshing blend of gritty action and outrageous humor, describing it as “gnarly, messy, and packed with goofy visual gags and fight scenes where the combatants get melted or mutated, sometimes exploding into wall-splattering showers of vivid, chunky gore.”
Despite positive feedback and a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes,The Toxic Avenger faced a surprising setback. After its festival run, it was difficult to secure a distributor, leading to concerns that the film might never see a wide release.
Now, Cineverse, the company behind the wildly successful Terrifier franchise, has stepped in. With 2024’s Terrifier 3 becoming the highest-grossing non-rated film in U.S. history, Cineverse clearly has a knack for tapping into audiences’ appetite for over-the-top horror.
“It’s so cool that folks will have the chance to see this in theaters,” said Blair in a statement. “[I]t’s a fun rowdy movie you wanna see with a crowd. Mutant hero smashes bad guys with a mop: perfect entertainment for the whole family!”

Macon Blair: Swinging Toxie’s Mop into Theaters
Archyde recently caught up with Macon Blair, the celebrated director behind “The Toxic Avenger” reboot, to discuss his gritty yet comical take on this ’80s cult classic.
Yoru version of “The Toxic Avenger” has been praised for its blend of gritty action and outrageous humor. What inspired you to approach the reboot this way?
“Well, I wanted to stay true to the original’s spirit, which was always a bit insane and over-the-top. But simultaneously occurring, I thought there was an opportunity to ground the story more, make it grittier, and give it some real emotional resonance. I love movies that can be both funny and disturbing, so I guess that’s just the kind of filmmaker I am.”
Tell us about casting Peter dinklage as Winston Gooze/Toxie. What did he bring to the role that you didn’t initially expect?
“Peter’s just an incredible actor, and he has this unique blend of vulnerability and power that felt perfect for winston. What really blew me away was his physicality – he completely committed to the role, learning to use the mop like a martial arts weapon. Also, who knew he could be so hilarious? Some of those comedic moments were completely improvised.”
After a prosperous festival run, it was challenging to find a distributor. What made Cineverse the right choice to finally give “The Toxic Avenger” a theatrical release?
“Cineverse really gets films like ours. they understand that there’s an audience out there hungry for something wild and different, you know? With their success on the ‘Terrifier’ series, I feel confident they can handle ‘The Toxic Avenger’ and give it the big, messy, over-the-top treatment it deserves.”
For those who missed the film at festivals, can you give them a taste of what to expect when they see it in theaters?
“Expect to laugh, squirm, and maybe even feel a little uncomfortable. But most of all, expect to have a great time watching Toxie kick some major ass with his trusty mop. It’s a rollercoaster ride, and I hope people enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.”
