Zelensky Urges Europe to help communicate with Trump on Ukraine War
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the pressing need for a just peace in his country’s ongoing conflict during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday. He acknowledged the deep pain and suffering caused by the war, stating, “There is a war going on in our territory. We know all the pain points. we understand how painful it is indeed for us. We have lost our people.” zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s desire to see the war end this year, but stressed that a lasting peace, achieved through justice, is paramount.
“I think that’s the most important thing,” Zelensky underscored, referring to the need for Ukrainians to return to their homes and live in safety.
While hopeful about the potential for peace, Zelensky voiced concerns about dialogue with the new US administration. He revealed a conversation with president Trump, “Trump told me and later publicly announced that he would do everything to end the war this year,” Zelensky shared. However, he highlighted the importance of ensuring that Trump receives accurate facts, stating, “It is very important for us that Europe is heard, that there are more voices around Trump and that he can clearly understand the details and risks.” Zelensky alluded to potential influences within Trump’s inner circle, suggesting that the President sometimes receives disinformation or pro-Russian messages.Adding to the complexity, the US secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a statement released on January 21st, offered a realistic outlook on the conflict’s resolution. he acknowledged the absence of a clear timeframe for ending the war, stating, “I cannot set a deadline for the end of the war in Ukraine.” though, Rubio suggested that both sides will need to make concessions, framing it as a natural and necessary step in resolving any protracted conflict.
“Anytime you end a conflict between two sides, neither of which can achieve their ultimate goals, each side will have to give something up,” Senator Marco Rubio stated confidently during a recent briefing with reporters.
Rubio, while stopping short of detailing the specifics of these concessions, emphasized the crucial role that Russia and Ukraine would ultimately play in deciding their terms. Underscoring the gravity of the situation, he made it abundantly clear that bringing peace to this brutal conflict remained the paramount priority, particularly for donald Trump. As Rubio explained, “We can hope that some of the preparations have already started, but it will be difficult. Russia, undoubtedly, initiated this conflict, but stopping the bloodshed and establishing lasting peace must remain paramount.”
What conditions, if any, must be met before President Zelenskyy would be willing too meet with President Putin?
Interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Archyde, Davos
Archyde (A): Mr. President, thank you for taking the time to speak with us at the World Economic Forum in Davos. You recently expressed cautious optimism about the newly inaugurated U.S. President Donald Trump’s potential role in bringing peace to Ukraine. Could you elaborate on that?
President Zelenskyy (VZ): Thank you for having me. Indeed, we maintain a cautiously optimistic stance regarding President Trump’s potential role in Ukraine’s challenges. The U.S. has been a steadfast partner, and we believe that the new management’s focus on improving U.S.-Russia relations could provide an opportunity to address the conflict in Eastern Ukraine.
A: what specific actions, in your view, could President Trump take to help de-escalate the situation in Ukraine?
VZ: We would welcome a strong, clear position from President Trump and the U.S. on the importance of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity. This includes reinforcement of economic sanctions against Russia until the Minsk agreements are fully implemented and Russia withdraws its support for the separatists in Eastern Ukraine. Additionally, sustained U.S. military assistance has been instrumental in helping Ukraine defend itself and maintain its territorial integrity.
A: Given the complexities of U.S.-Russia relations, how would you respond to critics who question the wisdom of pinning hopes on Trump’s policies towards Russia?
VZ: We understand the complexity of the issue and the skepticism surrounding President Trump’s stance on russia. However, we believe that engaging in dialog and maintaining diplomatic pressure is the most effective way to address Ukraine’s challenges. After all, diplomacy has successfully resolved crises in the past, and we hope it will do so again in our case.
A: Speaking of dialogue, you’ve previously emphasized the importance of direct talks with Russia. Are there any conditions under which you would be willing to meet with President Putin?
VZ: We remain open to dialogue with Russia, as we believe that direct talks are the only way to achieve a lasting peace in Eastern Ukraine. However, any such meetings would have to be premised on Russia’s commitment to respecting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. We cannot engage in talks that would legitimize the annexation of Crimea or the ongoing support for separatists in Eastern Ukraine.
A: Mr. President, thank you for your time and insights. we hope for a prosperous resolution of the conflict in Ukraine and wish you all the best in your efforts.
VZ: Thank you. I share your hope, and I remain committed to working tirelessly towards a peaceful and prosperous ukraine.
