Phil had decided to give Thin lizzy a rest for a bit, and we were all working on various projects. John was this young, fiery guitarist with an astonishing passion for music. He was raw, hungry, and had this unique style that just jumped out at you.
Interviewer (Archyde): And he brought that energy into Thin Lizzy when he joined the band.
Scott Gorham: Oh, without a doubt! When John joined us, it was like a breath of fresh air. we knew we were on our last album with Phil, but John brought this incredible energy and vibrancy. He infused our music with a new intensity, a hunger that you can really hear on “Thunder and Lightning.” It’s one of my proudest memories of him.
Interviewer (Archyde): Speaking of intensity, John was known for his electrifying stage presence. What was it like performing alongside him?
Scott Gorham: It was incredible. John was a showman, there’s no doubt about it. But it wasn’t just about the stage presence; it was about his musicianship. He had this way of making his guitar sing, of telling a story with his playing. Offstage,he was a great guy,always kind and generous. But onc he stepped on that stage, he transformed into this force of nature.
Interviewer (Archyde): After Thin Lizzy, John whent on to join Whitesnake. How did you feel about him moving on?
Scott Gorham: At first, it was tough. We’d grown so close, you know? But looking back, it was the best move for him. David Coverdale saw in John what we all saw – a phenomenal talent ready to take the world by storm. I’m proud of what he accomplished with Whitesnake. He helped define that era of hard rock, and his influence can still be heard today.
