Mary Gabrielle McManamin, affectionately known as Gaelie, passed away peacefully on January 17th, 2025, surrounded by her loving family and the dedicated staff at Our Lady of Fatima Home in tralee. She lived to the remarkable age of 101, her life a testament to a century well-lived. Born on August 21st, 1924, in Main Street, Louisburgh, County Mayo, gaelies journey began in a small Irish town, but later brought her to the heart of County Kerry.
Gaelie made Tralee her home in Meadowlands, Oakpark, and she also spent time living in Warrington, UK.She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Michael (Broddie). Her passing leaves a profound void in the lives of her son Leo and his wife Sue,brother justin,grandsons Michael,Séan,and Anthony,grate-grandchildren Sophie,Samuel,Thomas,and great-great-granddaughter Dottie. her memory will be cherished by her sisters-in-law Catherine and Anne, nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-nieces, the extended McManamin and Morahan families, and a wide circle of friends.

Gaelie’s remains will repose at Sweeney’s Funeral Home in Louisburgh on Friday, January 24th, from 6:00 pm, concluding wiht Vigil Prayers at 7:30 pm. Following the vigil, her cortege will walk to St. Patrick’s church in Louisburgh. Her mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:30 am, after which she will be laid to rest in Kilgeever Cemetery, joining her beloved husband, Broddie.

“Gaelie’s love for her family was truly unparalleled,” Michelle shares. “She wasn’t just a mother and grandmother, but a true friend to her children and grandchildren. always ready with a listening ear, sound advice, or a hearty laugh, Gaelie’s presence brought immeasurable joy. Her grandsons, Michael, Séan, and Anthony, held a special place in her heart, as did her great-grandchildren: Sophie, Samuel, Thomas, and her beloved great-great-granddaughter, dottie. Though her passing leaves a profound void, the memories of her laughter and warmth will forever comfort those who loved her.

“Gaelie’s legacy is one woven with love, warmth, and unwavering strength,” Michelle reflects. “She taught us that age is merely a number, and it’s the love and kindness we share that truly matters. Gaelie constantly reminded us that family comes first and that joy can be found in the simplest moments. Her memory will live on through her family and everyone whose lives she touched. Every shared smile, every helping hand offered, keeps a piece of Gaelie’s legacy alive.

Her early life was deeply influenced by her family, strong Irish traditions, and the picturesque Mayo landscape. She was one of seven children, and her siblings have shared stories of their childhood filled with love, laughter, and resilience. Gaelie’s curiosity and warmth were evident even in her youth, traits that woudl serve her well throughout her life.
A: She moved to Tralee after marrying Michael “Broddie” McManamin. How did Gaelie adapt to life in a new town, and what roles did she play in the community?
MO: Gaelie’s transition to Tralee was smoother than you might imagine. She met Broddie while he was working in Mayo, and their love story spanned the decades. After they married, Gaelie came to Tralee with an open heart and a ready smile. She quickly became an integral part of the community. She was a devout Catholic, actively involved in her parish, and a tireless volunteer at local charities and community centers. Gaelie had a unique ability to remember everyone’s name and ask about their families, making each person feel seen and appreciated. This warmth fostered a deep sense of belonging and connection within her network.
A: Gaelie lived through an exceptional era – two world wars, political upheaval, and countless changes in society. How do you think she navigated these shifts?
MO: Gaelie witnessed and embraced an incredible amount of change. Through it all, she remained steadfast in her values and her faith. She spoke often about the importance of education and self-betterment, qualities she instilled in her son and grandchildren. During the difficult years, Gaelie found solace in her family, friends, and her love of gardening – a skill she passed down to many in her community. Above all, she possessed an unyielding optimism that saw her through even the toughest times.

MO: Gaelie’s secret was simple yet profound: she approached every day as a gift. She cherished her family and friends, she nourished her curiosity, she lent a helping hand, and she always found time for laughter. She didn’t dwell on the past or worry too much about the future; she was fully present. Gaelie modeled a life of joy, kindness, and gratitude, encouraging those around her to do the same. That, I believe, is her lasting legacy.
